Another post got me thinking about common place names for peaks/rocks as well as some more unusal ones.

There seems to be an abundance of

Granite Mt/Peak
Castle Rock
Beacon Rock

One of the more unusual mountain names: Triad Peak. The FA was done by three men all by the name of 'Dick', the first proposal was 'The Three Dicks' changed to Triad Peak.
Primus Peak
Triconi Peak

Throw Pyramid and Twin Peaks into that mess.

"Tri-Dick" would have been interesting. Or at least "Tripod," which is a story that would make me laugh.

Pyramid Peak is a good one. Twin Peaks reminds me of

The Brothers

I love the names of Cascade Pass and the Pickets:

In Utah we have 24 summits named some variation of Flat Top and 11 different Haystacks.

Red Mountain (peak, etc) may be one of the most common. I know it is very common in WA, with at least 6 that I know of- Snoqualmie Pass has one, west of Glacier Peak has one, Cle Elum river has one, B.C. cascades have one, there's one near Sultan, and one near the Chiwawa River.

My favorite are ones that are named after other things, often in groups: Dynaflow Tower, Overdrive Tower, and Hydramatic Spire near Dome Peak; Caradhras, Orthanc, Dol Goldur, Dol Amroth, and Mindolluin Crag near Mount Buckindy; Backbone Ridge includes the Coccyx, the Sacrum, Lumbar Point, Thoracic Point and Cervical Point.

The Pickets are great, though; names like Terror, Inspiration, Fury and Challenger make them legendary in my mind, and I haven't even seen them much less climbed them.

Sawtooth Peak/Mountain is another common name. I have always thought Cloudripper was the greatest name for a mountain. Not a peak, but in the Trinity Alps, there is a lake named Billy-Be-Damned Lake.

Seems to be a Sugarloaf Mountain pretty much everwhere you look.

Among the most unique, I suppose would be peaks with native names, Aoraki, Tapue O Uenuku and Tutoko in New Zealand come immediately to mind.

Speaking of dislocation, there is a Mt Alaska just north of Queenstown, New Zealand.

Common

Bald Mountain and Black Mountain are both very common names. On SP, I myself have two Bald mountain pages and will be adding my second Black Mountain today and tomorrow.


For rocks/towers, there are a lot of Lone Rocks and Chimney Rocks, at least around here.

Around a dozen Iron Mountain/Peak type pages on here, and a fair few Indian ... pages too.

Translations of foreign languages are interesting , Tetons being among the obvious. We had variations on Pig Mountian in NM (e.g. Cerro Cochino), somehow more euphonious in Spanish. Even Bald Mountain (Cerro Pelon), Big Head (Cabezon), Fly Mountain (Mosca), Little Tit (Tetilla) and Very Little Tit (Tetillita) sound better in Spanish.
