The [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SierraEscarpmentCA.jpg"]panorama of the Owens Valley[/url] on it's Wikipedia page is one of my favorite pictures of the Sierra. It shows just how massive the Owens is.

Many panoramas end up so badly "hotdogged" that they don't please the eye from a compositional standpoint. My favorite panoramas are the ones that you don't even know are stitched together.

I often find myself taking panoramas to give a better sense of scale in outdoors places. Wide angle lenses distort imagery and make giant scenes appear too small. Telephoto lenses give you the perspective, but just don't capture enough scenery. My solution is to cheat a bit and stitch pictures together. I believe the same effect could be achieved with a tilt-shift lens, but this is a lot cheaper:

Look for the yellow tent in the foreground!

Try downloading HugIn. It's a free download and it works well. I use it on all my panoramas.
