Well it took forever, but our local hills finally got a little snow....a "March Miracle" some might say

I found excellent skiing conditions in the San Gabriel mountains on Sunday....not far from the lift lines and crowds at Mountain High, in Wrightwood...peace, solitude, and untracked powder rewards a little effort.


Anyone know what Baldy is/was like?

I hope the snow sticks around for a while; more would be nice. I've got a free day coming up and a lap up San Gorgonio with snow would be a nice thing (on foot, not skis--don't have them...yet).

I am thinking the same - heading up the North slopes of San Gorgonio this weekend or next. Any reports on snow coverage and conditions?

I skied Xmas Tree Hill yesterday on some extremely wet and heavy snow. The storm produced about 3', now packed down to 2' on top of that faceted junk from weeks ago. Surprisingly, it has bonded pretty well but the first foot of new snow slides readily when prompted. The northern chutes on Charlton have sluff initiated from in the tree line.. ? Coverage is good enough to get some skiing done but it was terribly slow and a lot of work to push through.
We skinned the service road and had an easy trip in, on the way out we actually had to push to get moving, no sliding out this time. It'll be burned off by the weekend too.
It was generously warm out and doesn't appear to have any freeze coming this week. I fear for the snow conditions.
Now the Lagunas got some decent snow last weekend. I did a 6-mile loop around Big Laguna and Little Laguna Lakes during the storm on Sunday. Beautiful dry powder! Didn't do any downhill, I kept getting whited-out and blown around, but it was wonderful!

Penelope and I hiked San Jac yesterday from Humber Park. Extremely soft, wet snow all the way. Pen originally wanted to go on skis, later commented what a pain that would have been. We used snowshoes and had a hard, tiring day. Looks to me like the temps are way up there and the snow will not last long. FWIW.

Probably just a few patches of slush here and there. But things could be very different on Sunday, with up to 20 inches of snow possible by Monday morning!

3/26 update: San Gabriels got about a foot out of Sunday's storm. Good skiing at Mt. Waterman, but the resort is still closed for some unknown reason.

Skied into Coldwater Cyn this morning, via drop-in off Piss Point. Not Spring condition corn, but very nice sugar with some east cement and light crust going on. Was absolutely thrilled to get in there on such a lousy snow year!

Has anyone done the Baldy bowl since last weekend's storm. I'm guessing it should be in good shape for a few more days?

In shape for what? It did NOT look good from my perspective yesterday. Pretty bare getting near the top steepest section. Rockfall would be a big concern since it's not freezing at night; now of course we have some little "system" coming Saturday night.......

McGusto - did you see me waving from the top of Charlton Peak yesterday? A friend and I climbed Dollar Couloir then skied that sucker! Lovin' the Spring conditions for skiing right now!

You can most likely get away with not using snowshoes if you hit the trail by 7AM. Depending on your plans that afternoon or the next morning....crampons are a great idea; snowshoes if you're gonna travel late afternoon over sunburnt open sections over 9500'. Snow is consolidating nicely, I wouldn't be surprised if snowshoes were a waste of time. Have fun!
