Was it so necessary to disable the chat yet Montana :?: I used it. That push server would be good in my opinion

I pretty much always like new features, but glad to see Matt taking a step to lower SP resource on the server. :)

Not sure how much this would help, but if the chat was brought back, it should be on a separate page something like http://www.summitpost.org/chat . Then have a link on the bottom of SP called "Chat" so that people could find this making it less "forceful" but still usable. 8)

So Matt, does the chat require another authenication for the login? (like phpbb) The reason I ask is because I wonder if it's possible to create another database for the chat system so that it hardly effects the main SP site. I've seen chat software set up so that it doesn't log you into the chat "user" until you login to the chat section.

I didn't use the chat but I liked the notification system about changes to pages (the little red icon on the right). Not complainin' tho'...it's all good.

No, it wasn't absolutely necessary. There were a very few people that were using it and only a handful of messages were sent every day. If there is a bit of demand, we can foot the bill to set it up on a push server.

Would it be possible to reinstate it :?: What do we have to express our demand :?:

Some changes may take place on SP soon. However there are bigger priorities at stake right now. Perhaps try asking again in a month or so.

Nope. Matt is planning/considering a server migration soon as well as some optimization. This would most likely increase the speed of SummitPost. I do not know how much it would help, but it would definitely be beneficial.

Also there are talks of adding more features to SP. There is a little bit of behind the scenes discussions going on. We do not know exactly what is going to be implemented. So for now I'll keep that part a surprise. 8)

There seems to be a decent amount of interest in doing a bit of modernization of the current SP template. Matt seemed to like the idea I had of working with what we have and making it better. So looks like I can play a big role in the new design.
Keep in mind that it's a beta template. That means that there are things that need to be added to it as well as fixed.

Timing is everything in this world. Whether it be when to work on my SummitPost pages, catching a bus, or watching a sunset. You can ask it any time you please. But keep in mind that there are better times to ask such questions. A few benefits of waiting are:

1) It will not slow down Matt or who ever is involved in making important upgrades.

2) Your chances of getting a feature implemented are higher when you ask at the right time.

I talk from experience on this. I've convinced many developers into adding great features into extensions and components. Timing on it was very important. If you make requests when lots of changes are taking place you will see a slow down in the number of requests being fulfilled. But at the same time there are phases when a web developer is willing to make lots changes. During that time you should say "please include this as well if possible". Priorities are also a big key in this. So if SP goes indeed go though some feature upgrades, it is better to add things like "chat" later. Doing it in this order will make it less work to ensure compatibility (upgrading twice is more work). Anytime you make a major upgrade to a site, you always have to make sure your third party extensions work well with it (phpbb3, arrow chat, ect). Phpbb3 is the main forum SummitPost is integrated with.

Since my last post I've actually been working on this almost the entire time. So at the very least there should be a new design coming up.

@ The Chief: You need to chill. I hope I didn't contribute to what your talking about.

Even though drama happens on SP, I've seen more drama on other sites. You ought not to put spray in a thread that is built on trying to move SummitPost forward.

No I don't need to chill.... KID!

I think you do Chief.

What the heck was all that about? Why do you keep looking at his (or other's?) profiles if you don't like seeing them? (PS, feel free to bash mine too).

(PS, I think this Chat feature is nonsense and was just poking in the thread to see what's up).
