Broken Top challenges in April/May

Postby ascasson » Wed Apr 11, 2012 7:19 pm

Hi folks,

The page on Broken Top says the climbing season is generally between July and September, but does anyone know what it's like to climb in April or early May?

I'd like to take a shot at it -- probably via the Catwalk -- in a couple weeks with a friend, if possible.

Cheers,

Ant

I climbed it in late July/early August several years ago. I took Green Lake Trail from Cascades Lakes Highway. When I approached Green Lakes I headed cross country to Broken Top. This time of year it is my understanding that Cascade Lakes Hwy is closed at Mt. Bachelor ski area. If true, then you might have to cross country ski to approach BT. The whole trip could longer and in snow. I definitely would call to verify Cascade Lakes Hwy access prior to starting your trip.

Sounds like they're shooting for road clear by Memorial Day.

One option would be a Middle Sister trip via Pole Creek trail, or Broken Top via Pole creek since it ties in with the Green Lakes Trail. Pole Creek Trail seems to open up before Hwy46 by a month or so.

Not an expert since I live in NC but did MS via Pole Creek last May You'll need skis or snowshoes Highway from Mt Batchelor was snowed in and had difficulty tracking down a snowmobile ride.
