I suspect that as the Boomers age it's only going to get worse.

They are responsible for a lot. Largest demographic the country has ever seen, extremely protective of their privileges throughout their lives.

And I just happened to see this sentiment expressed on a gun forum this week:

A Calguns member wrote:I have decades of hiking under my belt - often weeks at a time. I know most of the Sierra backcountry like the back of my hand. But we aren't in our twenties or even our thirties forever and at some point we have demanding careers that don't give us the summer off and we can't put 60 pounds on our back and chug up several thousand feet of elevation anymore. Instead of weeks we have days, and hunting seasons are in some pretty cold, sometimes dangerous weather - in the deserts hot, often dangerous waterless weather. Hunting with dogs, by the time you walk in a few miles with all the crap your dogs and you are tired when you get to where you are headed and whatever else you do, you still have the hike out . . . Look at the larger picture and when you get a little further down the trail, you'll see what I'm talking about.

In other words, while I enjoyed hiking through an unspoiled wilderness in my youth, now that I and the rest of my demographic cohort are older, it's time to make some changes to ensure that we can continue to enjoy the backcountry on our own terms.

A pretty typical sentiment, I have found.

Isn't Simonov a "baby-boomer," Born 1946--1964? Are the Gen-X and Gen-Y folks any less narcissistic?

I'm borderline (born 1962).

I don't think Gen X or Gen Y are any less narcissistic and self-absorbed. There just aren't so damned many of them.

According to the US census bureau for the year ending 2009, for males (not very different for females),

the age group 25-44 had 41.0 million US residents;

the age group 45-64 had 40.6 million US residents (this was ~ the baby boomers in 2009).
