I'm in Europe but posting it here because I had a *very* PNW morning yesterday! A friend bought a new snowboard and wanted to try it out before the snow is all gone. He picked a destination that surprised me...very low elevation, required some road walking...overall it seemed dubious. But okay, saddle up!
Plus it was raining. Hard. All day. We got to the road and got the car stuck in the snow. Later we got it out and walked. I had skis, he had snowshoes. Eventually the patches of snow dried up and we just pounded the pavement. Soaking wet, on a "Mountain Loop Highway" style road, I thought "wow, this is just like Washington State!" Finally we tried a different route in the fog, just to get away from roads. But then we lost the trail under snow and cliffs, and after some mucking around in the brambles I could almost *see* the Slide Alder. Takes me back...
The day ended when we found a 50 meter high erosion slope on the side of the road with enough snow on it to let him de-virginize his new snowboard and make a few turns. Finally we had some smiles going in the sopping wet snow and drenched gear. Back to the car...
It's good to visit Washington every now and then!
