Memorial Day weekend...FOUL weather jinx ?

by David Senesac » Tue May 22, 2012 5:09 am

I notice the NWS long range forecasts for the coming holiday weekend are talking about a trough setting up across the north and central parts of the state with snow showers through Saturday. In the old days there were several years where such a forecast was a sure kiss of death haha. Each time instead of pushing east, a trough would surprise forecaster and just sit on top of the Sierra for two or three days making myriad car campers and backpackers bail back to lowland motels from constant snow showers above 6k with chilly unpleasant temps. So is the jinxter back again this year?

Yep, I can remember plenty of snowy Memorial Day weekends. One year, I made the best of it by hiking the Owens River Gorge from the Crowley Lake Dam down for a few miles. I would highly recommend that hike to anyone looking for a little adventure, as there is no trail and the place is very wild.

Yosemite Valley can be really spectacular with clouds dancing around the huge granite walls too.

There are other great spots to explore while the high country gets a little snow. I suppose there are even folks who look forward to a little of the white stuff.

It was pretty windy and weird last year this weekend, and 2 years ago we had a damn blizzard in SoCal. =8O

Whiteout in the Carson Valley- not sticking tho.

We're supposed to get a couple inches above 7k with this storm.

A Blast of cool canadian air and 30+ mph winds has made the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan a bug free zone! I am loving it!

Light snow in Aspendell right now, too, but it isn't sticking either.

I'm just going another weekend. Gas is too expensive to get stuck in crappy weather :)

I just had to look up the Porcupine Mountains. Looks pretty cool. Gotta get out there someday.

Spent Friday night in the Alabama Hills and awoke to low snow on the mountains and low ominous clouds. Hiked from Horseshoe Meadows to Cottonwood Lakes under partly to mostly cloudy skies and cool to cold temps. Saturday night/ Sunday morning was just f**king cold but by Sunday afternoon it was sunny and we were bumming around camp in shorts.

Crazy weekend weather.
