I'm partial to slings and nuts because they're light and cheap. I usually bring 20 m of 9/16 or 15 mm tape and a set of leaver nuts (stoppers, hexes, tri-cams, whatever, mixed). I usually only bring pins in the winter when I otherwise have a tool with, unless I know for sure I need pins. Add a few (1 for each rap station) quick links or leaver biners to ease pull downs. And bring rap gloves and a helmet! Rocks'll be a flyin', guaranteed!

I'll throw a couple bundles of 5mm cord in the pack, if my descent route is a question-mark. Cheap, and you can cut to needed length.
where am i going... and why am i in this handbasket?

Slings & pegs and hammer - at least in the place which I explore, which is an extremely chossy limestone. And yes, take a helmet as someone wrote before.

I carry 20 meters of 6 mm cord and 2 - 4 KB/Bugaboo pitons and # 1 & 2 angle pitons, in addition to the 8 largest nuts and and the 4 largest hexes. If you anticipate others using your rappel route, add some hardware store 1/2" steel quick links.

As alpine345, I only carry pitons in the winter when I have an ice hammer with me.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'll stick with a set of nuts and some 6mm cord.
