skills practice on Hood?

by kylenicolls » Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:20 am

Whats a good glacier to practice ice climbing, haul systems and crevasse rescue on at Hood? The White River is pretty accessible and I read is good later in the summer, which seems to be near. I would expect the other good option is the Emmons, I've never been to that side of the mountain, so I do not know the accessibility.

Recommendations?

Thanks, Kyle.

I've never cragged the Eliot, but I have monkey'd around on the WRG icefall- big pluses for being a 20 minute walk from micro brew on tap and hot food. And the car.
where am i going... and why am i in this handbasket?

I'm guessing WRG is White River Glacier and 20 minutes is from Timberline? I was under the impression it was a few hours. Considering the lodge is at 5500 and the glacier doesn't really hit until 8k or so. May be wrong, haven't been near the lower region of it.

The lodge is more like 5,900'. Going up will probably take an hour and a half at a moderate pace. Coming back down- OK, most guys probably aren't gonna do it in 30 (I meant to write 30 above)... maybe 45?

You can ride the lift up, too, if you're just ice cragging.
