Winter climb near Boise

by jonesdcu » Mon Feb 27, 2012 5:52 am

Hi,

New to the boards and pretty new to Boise. I'm looking for some fun summits within dayhike distance (2-hr drive max?). I have snowshoes and avalanche training but no avy gear.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You might try this local (mostly Boise and southern Idaho) discussion group:

I'm new on this board, so my response may be a bit late for this season. Two good areas that I know about are Mores mountain which is accessed directly from the Bogus Basin OB gates. There is actually quite a bit of terrain around Bogus that is good up until early April. I have some extensive GPS data and Videos on these routes here: http://hi-adventure.com/gps-tracks-videos/bogus-basin/
Also, another area that i am very familiar with, but have just started to venture in is the terrain above Soldier Mountain. There are at least 6-7 good peaks in the 9500 - 10000 foot range that all have great skiing / boarding well into May. Here is the post of my first exploration foray into this area.

And to see a better view of the peaks, look at the pics in the page on this site:

Not sure how close to Boise it is, but some friends did a cool looking winter route on the NF of Borah: http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthr ... ber=982758

Borah NF is not often done in the winter due to extreme cold and avy hazard. And it's about 4 hours each way from Boise.
We did it the week before your friends, but without the added excitement of getting lost ;-)

Thanks for that. There is precious little information on Idaho. I myself have always barreled through at 80 MPH on my way to the Tetons or Colorado. I have promised myself If I get well I am going to spend time doing more 'staycations': trips within a one day drive of Seattle, which means more time spent in Idaho and Montana.

There's nothing to look at over here.

You are not fooling anyone. Some locals make the drive every year and report beautiful granite, bucolic lake, and lots of potential new routes. I'm all over that when I get well.
