I'm looking to do some peak bagging in the Cascades in the next week or so. I have a Golden Retriever and a Yellow Lab. that I hike with. I don't care about elevations as much as looking for dog friendly peaks. Also looking for day trips. I'm currently in Spokane and wondering where to go from here. Thanks everybody that responds with some ideas.

Dogs are not allowed in many areas in the Cascades, including National Parks and designated wilderness areas. The peaks that do allow dogs that come to mind include Mt Si, Granite Mt, Tiger Mt, Cougar Mt, and Sqauk Mt. All offer nice hiking trails and allow leashed dogs. These peaks are all off of I-90 east of Seattle.

E.B. I had to laugh when you said that about the dogs in national parks. I just quit my summer volunteer position at Glacier N. P. because my dogs couldn't go anywhere or do anything. They even busted my chops because the dogs were in the back of my Jeep Wrangler when the rear windows were removed. I couldn't take it. Anyhow, thanks for the tips. I'll check them out.

You are welcome. I'm sure there are other dog friendly areas, just not anywhere I usually climb. Some areas you need to be careful of wildlife. I recall a dog gored to death at Washington Pass (Liberty Bell, North and South Early Winter Spires) by a goat.

Keep em on a tight leash whatever you do. I see way too many irresponsible dog owners out hiking on main trails letting their dirty dogs run wild jumping on anyone they see including small kids. It's just completely irresponsible.

I have the same problem with irresponsible adults and their dirty kids. I try to walk my dogs on a "tight leash" and the irresponsible parents let their kids run wild and go after my dogs because they want to play with them. I guess there's more than one way to look at that. Anyhow, I wasn't looking for advice on how to walk my dogs but simply looking for places that are dog friendly. Thanks E.B.

Your dog's value does not exceed human convenience.

I love MY 2 Labs!!!! My wife loves them more than me, oh well. I like taking the dogs when we can, but Dawn's obsessed by it. Drives me nuts....can the dogs come, can the dogs come! SHUT UP

My dogs spurred me to get out more, but they add responsibility that is nice to have a break from at times. Same with kids. I've got to get them all out often or I'll pay for it somehow.

Leaving the dogs at home isn't a choice for me. I've been on the road for (2) months living in my truck camper. If I decide to climb one of the bigger peaks in the Cascades I'll leave the dogs in a kennel but I can't do that for every day hike. That's why I asked about dog friendly hikes. Dogs can be a lot of fun on the trails. And I seriously have seen plenty of kids that are far worse than my dogs. Maybe it's time for parents to leash their kids while on the trails ? This country needs more rules / laws .........

Yep, more laws!

I know of things that kids and dogs may do that can be a nuisance, but have only rarely witnessed or heard of any serious issues happening with either. Some people are more easily bothered than others. Most dog threads get unwanted warnings and advice thrown into them. I will say that I tend to avoid crowded places with my dogs, especially crowded places with lots of off leash dogs.

Jerry, if you ever make it down to California, we've got lots of dog friendly national forest land,BLM land, and non-NP wilderness areas, along with some friendly local and county parks. I tend to avoid visiting National Parks due to a situation much like yours, but more as temporary vacation spurts rather than permanent. There are lots of peaks to enjoy. Thanks Sean........agree with you completely. Lots of uptight people in this world. I'll probably be down your ways when the temperatures cool down. For now I'm thinking of going further north.

The last 2 times I've been out I had to defend myself from dogs that the owners let run wild. Dog's coming up and barking like they want to kill me for no reason. 100% uncalled for. A few nights ago I was out on a evening Mtn Bike ride and got chased by a german shepard and the owner just sat there and watched. I had to get off my bike and take care of business. I felt bad for the dog because it wasn't his fault, but if the owner was responsible it wouldn't have happened.

It has nothing to do with being uptight and has everything to do with the fact that dogs are animals and they can be unpredictable.

Most of you on here are probably good about this. I love dogs too, have been the proud owner of many.
