Eastern Sierra road/snow conditions - winter 2012-2013

by Luciano136 » Thu Oct 11, 2012 6:40 pm

With the first snow in the forecast, I think it's time to kick start this thread :)

I will be interested in knowing the road conditions to the Mosquito flat trailhead on Friday.

Snowed above 8000 feet, but melted by the end of the day. Above 10,000 feet, the snow looks like it will stick for a while. The road to Mosquito Flat is probably clear, but I didn't go up there, so I can't say for certain.

The storm sure added some character to the scenery. The first snow of the season always highlights all the details of the mountains. Morrison and Laurel looked much more mysterious peeking out from behind the breaking clouds. The fall colors seemed a lot brighter today too. Wished i had my camera to show you what I'm talking about.

Thanks guys! I've decided to go next weekend since work is a little busy. The extended forecast looks great so far, so some more snow should melt. I want to move quickly, so the less snow the better.

How far in from Mosquito Flat are you going?
Nunc est bibendum.

Not sure yet. I'm contemplating either a dayhike of Mt. Whitney (might be tough now with the new snow) or go for an easier scenic day in the Little Lakes Valley. I wouldn't mind a repeat of Mt. Starr.

If anyone has driven up there after the latest storm, I would be interested in knowing the road conditions. Driving a sporty vehicle with summer tires, so it pretty much has to be clear to the TH.

Thanks!!

Are you asking about Saddlebag Lake road off of TPR (120)?

Saddlebag lake road is open; snow melting fast, but quite a bit on the summits above 12k; North Peak couloir Left is partly in; Right and Middle still out and covered in 2-4 new inches of snow

Starr would be a good choice in the Little Lakes Valley, it had the least amount of snow of any peak in that area on Sunday. It probably won't have any snow left on it by this weekend.

Thanks for the info! Seems like the best pick.

Nice day on Starr Saturday. Both road and trail were completely clear (probably changed in the meantime).
