layering question?

Postby meszi90 » Sat Nov 10, 2012 2:23 pm

Hi all!

I would like to buy a perfect four season set.
I mean:
midlayer: Arcteryx Atom LT / very good insulation for winter, very warm
outer shell: Marmot Precip / almost fully waterproof, breathable, windstopping

any other recommendation for a good value set?

After due and diligent consideration of:

your desire for perfection,
the activities you will be performing,
your previous experience
and lastly the elaborate embellishment of the conditions which you you shall be facing,

I strongly recommend the following.

For this garment "has no equal on earth"...

You can pop on the Atom LT underneath if it gets a bit chilly

Might be worth a read:

The "perfect" 4 season set is going to be a lot of clothing depending on what you do and where you travel. An Atom LT makes a good summer alpine jacket. Or a mid layer or outer layer in winter depending on temps and activity.

But IMO the Atom LT is a very specific bit of clothing. Great for climbing where it is cold and you are very active. But not very good in the wind.

Hi!

4 season set:

IMHO Its best to have two shells one for summer and one for winter.

For Summer I have a Marmot Mica I got on sale for $60. It fits well with a closer fit than most shells which is great since in summer or fall/spring I only use thin fleece as a mid-layer if anything. Weights about 6 ounces and packs down to almost nothing.

For Winter I like Softshells with some stretch and some room to layer but not a whole lot. My new choice is the Arcteryx Venta MX (I used the First Ascent Frontpoint quite a bit before buying this). Unreal jacket. Its bomber! Well made, has a good bit of stretch and features but it isnt too heavy. Stops wind and even heavy precip. Seems like it can handle anything even constant contact with rock. Can be used in a very wide range of weather due to pit zips. (although im not a fan of them in most jackets ive used and tend not to bother using them at all)

Regarding insulation the ATOM LT is my outer layer of choice for summer in the alpine (used it in Glacier National Park this past july with great results) but it also works great as a mid layer for very cold conditions or as an outerlayer for winter if you are active or for warmer days hanging out. Its very versatile.

I also have the ATOM SV that I use as outer layer for colder conditions. Can be combined with the Atom LT for a great 2 jacket system. If its cold you can hike/climb with just a baselayer and the Atom LT and then when on belay or stops put on the Atom SV. Thats it. Very simple system.
