Bone marrow donation - NEED YOUR HELP FOLKS

by PAROFES » Thu Nov 15, 2012 1:05 pm

Folks, please read my last update on the article about my health issues: http://www.summitpost.org/the-scariest-moment-of-my-life/803637
Very sad now, terrible news I got, so all I can do is to wait for a suitable donor...try to stay healthy, stress free...

Please, be a donor!
For more information, please access: http://www.bmdw.org/
(Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide)

It may be a while before I log in here again, I am really not in the mood for anything right now.

Cheers folks

Good luck Paulo. For potential US donors, the place to register is here: http://marrow.org/Join/Join_the_Registry.aspx
It involves a cheek swab using a kit they send you. After that there's about a one in 540 chance you'll match somebody and be called on to actually give marrow cells.

The registration and swab kit is free if you are between 18 and 44; if you're older, they ask for a monetary donation to help with the kit/database costs. The upper limit on registration is age 61.

I can provide a little more detail on registering. It takes 30 minutes or so to go through the online questions on the US site, but there is a "save and finish later" option, which is nice. Have your address book handy since they ask for quite a few alternative contacts (so they can track you down years from now if they suddenly have a match). The financial page at the end (which mostly just applies to those over 44) is poorly designed but seems to work ok if you read very carefully.

The US site would only work for US addresses for the swab kit. Canadians do it this way: http://www.blood.ca/CentreApps/Internet/UW_V502_MainEngine.nsf/page/E_ubmdrPKG-intro?OpenDocument&p=OMFormE

Marrow.org set up a desk at the gym at work earlier this year and I signed up there - took less than five minutes.

Hope you find a match soon!

Thanks all of you for the kind words. New visit to the hospital in dec 12 2012. Probably the last this year.
Best wishes
