Looks good, guys!

The only bug I've noticed is that the button that allows one to link back to the original picture page on sliding panoramas is gone. I noticed this issue on one of my pages, but it also affected the sliding panorama example given in the FAQ.

A serious problem on formatting Matt, (assume this might be one of Josh's changes) ...is that, to make a page balanced pre #3, we inserted photos to align right (or left) in the first submission box...they then trailed down the page along all the text and different submission boxes, "route beta", "essential gear", "external links"....this suggested format goes way back to Ryle I believe.... the cleanest way to trail photos down one side or the other of the text was to insert them together....

I agree, in the end, we need to make it easier to insert photos...idiot proof if you will..I agree with that...if we had fixed that here, I could see it worth going into every route and mountain page submitted and redoing the photo insertion....although I certainly could not afford the time myself....but I don't believe we made photo submission easier....so photo alignment needs to be fixed to be consistent with how it appeared in #2...check out this page, 99% of my beta pages will look like this, photos making pages way to deep, pushing text down to the bottom with a huge blank space...

good luck you 3....I know you got a lot of work ahead as you keep working on it

http://www.summitpost.org/rainbow-serpent-iii-wi-6/260256 (affects 99% of my submissions)

Other item is bullets...they are trailing off to far to the edge and into the ad column margin, i.e. here

http://www.summitpost.org/red-rock-climbing/171112 (affects 50% of my submissions)

and final one I see is added "returns" (=space) between lines....assume in #2 we had to hit return to create a line space and #3 is counting it twice for some reason, reference the Red Rock page above

incredible speed, impressive

Again, formatting -- this page used to fit well in a resizeable window-- now it seems to be stuck on formatting for an ultra-wide window:
http://www.summitpost.org/cleopatra-ham ... ano/375219

By chance, I was checking that page for a "hike" tomorrow -- quite a surprise.

Update: 2 minutes later, the automatic resizing suddenly started working. I hope this is the result of a change!

Dow is correct about the trailing photos thing. If that's an inevitable product of the new bars and is a permanent change, let us know and we'll go into our pages and rejigger placement of photos.

visentin wrote:I like the new presentation, just one minor issue: in many pages authors have used links in the legends of photos. Links are dark and so are the picture frames, which makes them not very visible. Easy to correct I think.

Visentin makes a good point--contrast between links embedded in captions and the frame color is a little insufficient for easy reading.

Maybe Josh/Matt can adjust the code so links show as white or some brighter color. I've grown to rather like the grey borders (this was something I initially had reservations about. I think they were unfounded)

Based on what I've seen so far, in the new style, everything in a particular section (i.e. what you call a submission box) will be displayed before the header of the next section. This actually gives a little bit more control over where images go than before, you can now be sure they will appear in the section where they belong. Previously, I sometimes had a bit of trouble getting the images where I wanted them, and sometimes resorted to a bit of HTML.

I saw that too, but assumed it wasn't a bug, but intentional. In fact, I think it's an improvement: you don't need that button, you can click on the image itself for the same effect.

As far as the FAQ is concerned, there are some more sections that need to be updated, like the ones on voting and power points. I reckon that getting the site itself upgraded has higher priority than updating the FAQ.

It so happens that I use sliding panoramas regularly. This morning, shortly after SP was up again, I spent some time figuring out how to make it look good again, and have changed a few of my pages accordingly. In fact, I've used HTML for other non-standard things as well. I regularly have images in non-standard sizes, and sometimes want to embed a map or a weather report, to name a few.
The new SP means I'll have to check and fix all my pages. I was fully aware that this might happen when I decided to use HTML, so I will do it in the next few weeks.

Here is an example of a working HTML fragment that shows a scrolling panorama:

<noformat>
<div align="center" class="thumb" style="background-color:transparent !important;">
<div style="width:976px;height:540px;overflow:auto;">
<a href=/view_object.php?object_id=779733>
<img src="http://images.summitpost.org/original/779733.jpg" height=500>
</a>
<br>Panorama of Tocllaraju, taken during my reconnaissance hike. If you look closely, you can see where the trail gains the NW ridge.
</div>
</div>
</noformat>

To use this, replace the object link with whatever you want to refer to, replace the image link by a link to your image, and substitute something meaningul for the image caption.
The example uses a summitpost image, and links to the page for that image, but you can use any image or link. For the record, the image extension is case sensitive: if you posted your image with extension .JPG, then you have to use JPG, not jpg to refer to the image!

And here is an example of a big centered image, but not so big that I want scroll bars:

<noformat>
<div align="center" class="thumb" style="background-color:transparent !important;">
<div style="width:976px;">
<a href=/view_object.php?object_id=780495>
<img src="http://images.summitpost.org/original/780495.jpg" width=970>
</a>
<br>
Tocllaraju panorama from high camp. The NW ridge is on the left.
</div>
</div>
</noformat>

I've used these two fragments in my latest trip report. As I only posted that a few days ago, I obviously wanted it to look all right again as soon as possible.

Note: Edited to fix a small bug in the code examples.

Exactly!

I used to always use code to force this to happen, no I don't have to. I suppose I am indifferent on what SP does here, since I can control it with the code. But I sometimes noticed previously that photos on the right would appear in the wrong section on some people's pages. That doesn't happen now.

So the code chane made some people's pages better, and some worse (though I think the white space isn't always that bad to have). And photos don't appear when you use the print mechanism.

But, there doesn't appear to be any mechanism for linking back to the original picture page. Clicking the picture on a sliding pano doesn't work if you use the code given in the FAQ example. I realize that this affects very few members, but I just wanted to throw it out there to Matt, Josh and chad in case it's related to some of the other html issues. :)

rgg is correct. It was intentional. But I do see that the panorama in the FAQ isn't linked to the main image when clicked. Is it similar on your pages? If so, please provide a link and we'll see what we can do about fixing that

Hey, could somebody look at this page:

http://www.summitpost.org/view_object.php?object_id=815642&confirm_post=7

and tell me why the 3 photos under "Views" are no longer displaying? They displayed fine in v.2. They are still in the underlying code and are coded as follows:

<center><a href="http://www.summitpost.org/summit-view-east/815639/c-815642"><img src="http://images.summitpost.org/original/815639.JPG" "height=500 and width=750"></a><br /><br /></center>

<center><a href="http://www.summitpost.org/eastward-view/814692/c-815642"><img src="http://images.summitpost.org/original/814692.JPG" "height=500 and width=750"></a><br /><br /></center>

Log in Problem - somehow my account and Moni's have become linked. When I sign in, it is as me, but when she signs in it is a me also. eg when she signs in and goes to "Your Profile", she ends up on mine. Also, when I sign in and go to her profile it says that she in online also.

I couldn't resist fiddling around with it. The closest I got is this:

Code: Select all
<noformat>
<div align="center" class="thumb" style="background-color:transparent !important;">
<div style="width:770px;height:630px;overflow:auto;">
  <a href=/view_object.php?object_id=832086>
   <img src="http://www.summitpost.org/images/original/832086.jpg">
  </a>
<br>180 Degree Panorama From Summit</div>
</div>
</noformat>

In your page, this should replace the fragment
Code: Select all
<center><table class="thumb"><tbody><tr><td><div><div style="width:770px;height:470px;overflow:auto;"><img src="http://www.summitpost.org/images/original/832086.jpg"></div><div class="magnify" style="float: right; margin-top: 5px;"><a href="/view_object.php?object_id=832086" title="View Pano"> <img src="/images/layout/abby/magnify.gif" alt="Enlarge"></a></div><font color="black">180 Degree Panorama From Summit</font></div></td></tr></tbody></table></center>

If you want to see the result before pasting it into your page, look here.

It's close, but not quite ideal yet, for (at least) two reasons:
- The caption below the image scrolls along with it
- No vertical scroll bar (I can get one, but then the caption would only show up after scrolling down and that's no good)

But there are some good points too:
- Horizontal scroll bar
- The same look-and-feel as a regular centered image
- There is a link to the object page if you click on the image

If I manage to do a better job, I'll post it again. I don't know how often I've used vertical scroll bars myself, but at least one, so I have to look into it soon anyway when I check and fix that page.

Good luck, Rob

Matt,

I removed all cookies, and the problem persists. When either of us is logged in, It show us as both logged in. "Your Profile" always goes to mine. When Moni is logged in posts show as by her, but she only gets my profile. When I am logged in everything is normal except for showing Moni as logged in also.

Just a thought:

"height=500 and width=750"

is not valid HTML.

Try

height="500" width="750"

instead. It should work without the double quotes as well, by the way.
I guess that the reason the images showed up previously is that SP was more forgiving, and incorrect HTML stuff usually got ignored. The new SP still lets through a few things that are incorrect HTML (that is, it's left to the browser to figure it out), but a whole lot more is caught than before.
