Huayna Potosi - Rainy Season

by JosephRobertson » Fri Feb 01, 2013 4:21 pm

Hi all

I am currently in Bolivia, and I have most of my climbing gear with me as me and a friend climbed Aconcagua late last year. We have been lugging this gear round since fully assumming we would not get another chance to climb again as the rainy season is upon us in Bolivia and Peru, and Ecuador requires expensive guides for any climbs these days.

However I have started hearing from other travellers that they have (successfully) climbed Huayna Potosi of the Cordillera Real and other "easier" climbs around La Paz lately. Is it not as bad climbing at this time of year as I have always assummed or is this dodgy tour companies making a fast buck at the expense of their clients safety?

I would really like to do some more climbing before I return to England in April, however I dont want to do anything reckless.

If anyone has any information on this I would love to hear from them.

Regards

Joseph

I'm not sure about HP as a friend tried it one January and it was just constant rain and avalanches. But apparently Sajama/Parinacota/Pomerape can be done in February etc. though it is not ideal. Also depends, as always, on the nature of the particular season, which can vary there quite a lot.

If you want to have an epic then go for it. That is one crazy mountain this time of year.

¨constant rain and avalanches¨ what more could you want from a climb?!?
That said i may still give a go, found some reasonably cheap guides in case i cant find any other climbers to go with.

Cheers for the responses guys

Let us know how you did and the snow conditions you encounter for future reference this time of year. Cheers
