I know this route and its basically a solo for an experience climber, it was my first winter route nearly 20 years ago, no crampons or ice axes I was pettrified and it was solo with a good friend !

I`m not sure why this guy wanted to take footage of the climb, it`s quite boring and as pointed out you`r helmet sahould be to stop stuff not to put things on it ! :?

It looks to me that he totally lost it when he saw the piece of ice comming towards him, he had two ice axes therefore one should have been a bomber to arrest his fall in the first place ! :o

Mistakes happend and this guy got away with it, hope he learnt his lesson, think he suffered bruising and a cracked or broken ankle lucky chappy....

Stay safe guys, rant over :P

You can't climb ice without crampons unless there are a lot of small rocks melted into it.

Holy crap, that's all I could think about, watching it. That would have been the end.

I disagree. If he didn't have a GoPro, we wouldn't have a thread. But they are like $200. Not worth risking your life to protect.

In fact, it can be a useful skill to know in the high mountains. Slow, but in places where there are large parties it works well. Don't have lots of shit coming down on the peeps in the back.

Inexpensive compared to the cost of the emergency room visit, I would guess?
Oh, that happened in Scotland. Maybe the healthcare there is 'free'?

The climb is in Wales......and yes with the NHS (National Health Service) the treatment is free.

Right? That was my first thought... this son of a bitch is going to snag a crampon, and he's going end-over-end and getting some air time in. I still don't know how he didn't. Anyway the other subject's been beaten to death, but yeah, if you're going to post that, be prepared for people to tell you you're an idiot. Unless it's something totally beyond your control, which this wasn't.

Id like to just comment.

1) A GoPro doesnt mean ego. I just got one . Because I love trying to make a film. And because I get emense pleasure from re visiting a climb on my Tv once in a while.
2) Noobs......we were all noobs once.

But yes........trying to bat the ice away with your hand isnt sensible, or the normal reaction. !
