Hardshells (which fabric) for a high altitude desert?

by highNdry » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:25 am

Hi all, I am a newbie here, but an experienced trekker, a fair amount of it at >4,000M. I am planing another extended trek in a remote, high altitude desert. I am trying to pack fairly light, but maintain the ability to deal with almost all climate conditions. I feel I need a hardshell, though mostly I am going to be using a quality softshell and I have a serious belay jacket for rest stops. BTW, we are talking northern hemisphere, july-september in a temperate zone. There is not likely to be much rain, but the wind will be quite strong and snow is always a possibility, especially on high passes (5,000M+).

I have heard that a desert climate (low moisture) means that breath-ability has its downside, that you have can have too much of a good thing. So with that in mind, I thought I'd ask if anyone felt that certain fabrics are more or less appropriate to this environment (e.g., my understanding is that eVent is probably too breathable). Let me know what you think!

A high desert in a temperate climate in the Northern Hemisphere with 5,000+ meter passes. Where are you going?

The Hindu Kush and the Pamirs in the Wakhan Corridor is the plan. Having the right gear in this case is as much about dealing with the remoteness as anything. I'm basically focused on being able to walk out regardless of weather.

How much do you sweat? I live in a very dry area, but when I am working hard, my body overwhelms my eVent jacket and I start to feel clammy.
