50 Years of Climbing

Postby Fred Spicker » Mon Jun 10, 2013 3:12 am

2012 was my 50th year of climbing - first summit in 1962.

I am wondering who else here has made that milestone.

2012 was my 40th year of technical climbing. I can only hope I'm good for another 9 years. My spirit is willing if my body holds up. I did bag a new FA here in Idaho last year and it felt, really, really good. I experienced the same excitement I did 40 years ago. I did bag my first (non technical) summit at age 11 so counting those years I'm at 49 years total.

Best regards,

My grandmother made it to at least 67 years of it since she climbed Kessler Peak in the Wasatch at around age 13 and Sinai at 80.

Is this where the little ones name comes from?

Congrads to Fred...I enjoy your postings here and comments...voice of reason. I took my first overnight hike to Lake Ozette with family at about age 10 wearing a Trapper Nelson.

I have an old black and white of my pack on that trip. Wish I still had that collectable pack. That would give me 50 years of hiking/climbing. First summit was a walk up with Seattle Mountaineers in about 1966, Kaleetan on the Snoqualmie Pass area. Just climbed Beckey route again on Liberty Bell a few weeks ago, but getting harder....

I'll be at 50 years in July as long as you count my fall hike up Mount Washington when I was 14.

Been at it since age 7 in 1955- insisted on climbing the "mountain" on the south side of Nickerson Lake next to Houlton, Maine. It's only 750 ft above sea level. Nickerson Lake itself is 379 ft above sea level so its a pretty modest climb-climbed Mt. Katahdin in 1958 and a couple of days ago moseyed along the redwood path up at Muir Woods. :ugeek:

OK, let me get my calculator since I've lost 80% of my brain cells.
Started when I was 16, so, what year is this now? I think 2013, 67 years old.
67-16=51 yrs of climbing? Holy shit, I'm still alive?

Kudos for 50years! I'm not sure when I first climbed Old Rag Mountain in VA but it was around 1973, so if a bit of class 3 counts I started 40 years ago. My brother and I hiked the Billy Goat Trail near Great Falls with my 81 year old Dad over Christmas break so with luck I've inherited his durability and will be at it a few more years. :)
