New peak page - Onaqui BM

by harbor » Sat Jun 22, 2013 7:36 am

Just made my first SP page. A friend from West Valley came out to Grantsville and hiked to the top of the Onaqui BM via West Canyon this week and came home to find there wasn't a page for it. If anyone has any feedback or more information regarding this not-too-popular peak please let me know. Thanks everyone. Glad I could give a little back to the SP Utah community.

Hi harbor,
FWIW,
Google Fu doesn't seem to turn up much but I found this:
Utah Place Names (John W. Van Cott, 1990) has this on Onaqui Mountains (page 281):
"The name is Goshute Indian: "Ona" refers to salt and "qui" is a locative syllable."

My guess is that it's a simple phonetic pronounciation where the Ona portion is pronounced like O-nah and the qui portion is pronounced like Kee. That is: O-nah-kee.

Be well,
JM
