Moving to Boulder!

by AlexeyD » Thu Jun 27, 2013 7:11 pm

After living almost my whole life in New England, I'm going to be a Coloradan beginning this August! My fiancee is starting a Ph.D. program at CU Boulder in September, and I'll be looking for work (it's pretty awesome when you have a reason like THAT to move out to a place like Boulder :)). Anyway...I have yet to grasp exactly what it means to be living within such short range of one of the premier mountain playgrounds in the country, but in the meantime, and particularly during my initial period of "funemployment" as I try to find work, I'd welcome any suggestions such as must-dos, bewares, or other general words of wisdom that you might think of directing towards a newcomer.

Thanks in advance, and can't wait to be out there!

Welcome and I hope that you have a great time once in Boulder. Here are some climbing suggestions... Some nearby classics include the Maiden, the 1st and 3rd Flatirons, the Petite Grepon, Yellow Spur and the like. You will fast discover that there are any number of totally awesome climbs in the Flatirons, at Eldorado Canyon, in Rocky Mountain park and the like that are every bit as good as those that I've listed, such as the Saber, Greenspur, the 5th Flatiron, etc. Climbs like the South Wing can make for wonderful days that I actually much prefer over the established classics as there are very few people and there are great lines to try out with no guidance from any guidebooks. Further afield anything in the Gore range is great as are peaks around No Name Creek and Ruby Creek in the San Juan range. If you want nontechnical hiking, pretty much the whole state is good, although the same could be said of Utah, lots of Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming. I've been there over twenty years and still have a to do list that never really gets any shorter.

Climbing is great, the traffic lights are terribly timed, it can get crowded once the university goes back to school, and LOTS of great places to eat and drink. That's all you need to know.

I'm moving to Boulder in August too! I'm starting law school at UC-boulder. I'm really excited to hike, climb, and camp everywhere I can.

Hey all,

I've been in Boulder for the past couple of years, Colorado the past five years. I love getting into the alpine and doing interesting routes. I too am starting my Ph.D. program this fall there in Boulder, and would love to hook up with some people who are hardcore about alpine pursuits.

Buy yourself a 2005 Subaru, slap a "Native" bumper sticker next to the "Keep Boulder Weird" one, start complaining about all the tourists (especially from CA and TX), participate in the Pumpkin Run or Naked Cycle, shave your legs if you bike, put a roof rack on your Subaru even if you don't bike, only frequent used-book stores, wear ironic glasses, frequently pepper your conversations with phrases like "farm-to-table", organic, sustainable; you can use "local" to describe anything in a positive light; and never, ever, admit to being from New England.
You'll fit right in.

So many people love to trash Boulder - and to them I say thanks for not moving here! There are enough people here living it up already. :)

Who said I was trashing it? I got my Master's degree from CU, drive a 2005 Subaru, read used books, had 2 local eggs for breakfast this morning sourced 50m from my front door!
I do not, however, wear ironic glasses of any kind.

Why would you think that any comment about the idiosyncrasies Boulder is trashing it? A little sensitive, perhaps?

Having lived here 10 years, everything pvnisher said is true. :-)

Still a *great* place to live, just weird.

This is also all true:

Fancy yourself a mountaineer? The waiters at Sherpa's have summited Everest. But at least those guys are nice. If Reinhold Messner himself walked into south Boulder's mountaineering shop to buy a carabiner, the sales staff would give him attitude.

That is one funny article!

One thing about stereotypes - they're mostly true.

Get a dog, a bad tattoo, and a Subaru --- you're in!

Hang some Tibetan prayer flags out front your house (you don't need to be Tibetan) and stop wearing shoes places. Wash your hair every month or so. Bingo!

I'm sort of joking and I'm sort of not...

Boulder is great for the location, but the people tend to have the same affliction that New Yorkers, (Los) Angelinos, and (San) Franciscans have --- they think the world revolves around where they live...

Wow, I have been living in CO for almost a year now, and haven't made it to Boulder yet. I guess I need to see this place for myself, sounds like a small Portland. Maybe I'll rent a fix geared bike, and some neon orange sunglasses and tour the place and still fit in.

Boulder definitely has its major pluses and major minuses.
