Smoke on Shasta from Oregonian fires???

by clmbr » Fri Aug 02, 2013 4:01 am

Can anyone from the area tell about smoky conditions on Shasta please? I’ve just got an info that even the mountain is hard to see due to the smoke from Oregonian fires.

I would appreciate any info. I was supposed climb Shasta over this weekend and am not sure if it would be feasible (healthy) or, perhaps, I should cancel the trip.

Thanks in advance.

It's been smoky. Check out the Shasta webcam as of 7 pm...

Today at least you can see the mountain but still not too well. It really sucks! I'll call rangers soon.

Typically, it has been smokey in the morning and has been clearing out in the afternoon. Also, the smoke is lower than much of the mountain. I was in the Warner Mountains on Tuesday and there was a good layer of smoke to the west but Mount Shasta was above the smoke, starting around the 9,500 foot point. Yesterday the smoke moved in in the afternoon but it hung really, really low. I could see the plumes over my house. For what it is worth, though this is by no means certain, the forecast is for the winds to shift and start pushing the smoke north towards Roseburg rather than coming south into Siskiyou County. We'll see if that happens...

Thanks Bubba for your help, as usually. I'm leaving for Shasta now.

Have a good time. I know you probably like to camp, but if you need a place to crash or shower up, I have a guest house across the street from me that is always available. For what it is worth, the smoke is not as bad today too.

The air was clear and fresh and the weather was perfect all the time, blue sky during daylight and Milky Way at nights. Many people climbed the mountain over that weekend.

If anyone cares, though it has been clear the last few days, the smoke has returned to Shasta this morning. It is coming from a fire on the Salmon River up near Sawyers Bar. It was crystal clear yesterday towards the mountain but the smoke was hanging low over the Shasta Valley. It has moved south with a vengeance today.

How is the smoke now? Can you smell it? I’m planning both McLoughlin and Shasta (Clear Creek) over this weekend. Thanks

Let us know how Clear Creek goes. I'm going to be hitting that in mid-September!
