Anyone wanting to crash for free in a spacious cabin on the east side located in between bishop and independence(or just get showers), heat up food/cook food, contact me via email (ignore the pm option) or just talk to me at the challenge assuming I am there (good chance I will not be there for every single one of the days-have to work tuesdays and wednesdays, but can probably take thursday off, also leg is giving me a bit of trouble still). I'll be the one with the blonde hair.

At least through next year. I just take it a year at a time because that's about as far ahead as I'm able to plan.

If there's one thing I've learned from my Sierra Challenge preparation training this year, it's that I seem to enjoy little mini Sierra Challenge weekends more than I think I'll enjoy the real thing. I understand that it's a long drive for Bob to come to the east side, and why it's favorable to him to stay for a long time when he does. Living in the LA area, I have a little bit easier access to the east side, and little weekend trips suit me just fine (I envy those of you lucky ones that get to live on the east side and have this stuff in your back yard). With that in mind, Bob has basically given us many great ideas for hikes over the years that can last long after he should decide to stop organizing the challenge. I couldn't stay last year for Vennacher Needle and the weather was bad for Barrett, so I came back in Mid September for a little make-up challenge. I foresee myself doing this more in the future, but still trying to come to the real challenge when possible. At least this once though, I want to try and endure all 10 days. I just hope I can get everything in order here at home before I leave tomorrow night...

I'm getting ready to head out today and I typically send a few last emails to the participants before I do so. As luck would have it, outlook.com is out of commission this morning and may or may not be back up in time. So if any participants are reading this, kindly check out this link for some last minute information on Avoiding Accidents and What to Expect.

Also, in case I forget to mention it, we'll gather after Friday's outing at the Whoa Nelli as folks come back off the trail. Feel free to stop by and join us even if you're not participating.

Regretfully, I can't make it out this year—looks like i'll have to wait until 2014 to debut my custom Challenge attire…

Hope everyone is safe out there, and much love to the #sierrachallengers

Had fun hiking up the Little Walker River to tag some obscurities (Hanna Mtn, Flat iron, some other unnamed point higher than the others) with Daria. Some horrendous slogging (vying with University Pass, if you can believe it), but a few nice scrambling lines. Found five registers for three summits - bonus day! Three of them were predictably left by the dynamic duo (Gordon/Barbara) in the 1980s. The Flatiron is an impressive granite outcrop in a sea of volcanic choss and very unexpected. A very cool line on the NE Buttress. There were three claims to the FA of the 5.8 route, one just a few months ago. Seems Dingus Milktoast and Brutus of Wyde probably had the first ascent back at the turn of the century. Found Adam Jantz signature in several registers from 2010. He's currently in Europe and will miss the Challenge for the first time in a number of years.

Off to the Jolly Cone!

Awesome outing just north of Bridgeport close to where the 395 and 108 meet.

Heading up Little Walker River/canyon we came upon views of Flat Iron peak and summit seen:

Day 1 - Crown Point

We had 20-some folk at the Twin Lakes TH today. 4 were heading Matterhorn (all made it to the summit), the rest to Crown Point near the Sierra Crest above Peeler Lake. Pat and Jonathan were the first to the summit in 3h45m via Peeler Lake, others taking somewhat longer. The north and east sides of the peak proved challenging, but taxing and more roundabout. Sean and Eric managed Cirque Mtn as a bonus peak (not to be confused with Cirque Peak in the southern part of the range). I don't think anyone else managed bonus peaks today - I had hoped to get to Slide Mtn, but it looked formidable with a 1000-foot drop to a saddle with a 900-foot climb back up to Slide. Just wasn't feeling it today, I guess.

Beautiful weather, a few clouds to help keep things cooler than they otherwise would have been. About 9 participants returned in the two hours I was at the TH before leaving. We probably got at least a dozen to the summit of Crown Point.

Tomorrow we'll be at Rock Creek to climb Twelve Flags, Broken Finger, and Adamson, all near Mt. Morgan South. Off to the Whoa Nelli!

Tomorrow we'll be at Six Flags in Vallejo... suffering lines, crowds, heat, overpriced food and beer. I'll be thinking with envy of all of you out there in the mountains. :)

Gonna try my best to participate in the SC for at least one day next year... If I don't, my punishment will be to take my family to (shudder) Disneyland, so flaking out is not an option! :D

Bob got his butt kicked today on what was supposed to be an easy day. I have no energy to write much, so I'll just say that Sean and Eric continue to be unreal animals, Jonathan, Pat and Luke proved far more clever than I today. Off to bed. I have to get up at 3am. Ugh. Long outing to Black Divide over Echo Col. This is one of the expected butt-kickers.
