Everest Base Camp in November

by Homestarhiker » Sat Jul 20, 2013 5:03 am

Hello all,
Could anyone tell me what kind of daytime/nighttime temperatures to expect at the Everest Base Camp in early/mid November? I'd like to trek up there and that's the only time that my schedule is open. I'm prepared for it to be cold, but I'm not sure how cold to expect.

Thanks

Probably around -18C/0F to -12C/10F at the camp. There is a weather station at Pyramid, near basecamp.

Do you need a permit to climb some of the smaller mountains there? Lakhpa Ri, Island Peak? Is there anything that you can just show up and do with a partner without having to deal with local politics?

It will be easier and quicker to just get a permit and a guide for the established trekking peaks (including Island Pk.) and anything higher than 6k. Probably expect to pay 300 USD for the climbing permit.

Its also pretty empty at EBC in November...instead skip EBC, and just hike to the top of Kala Pattar would be my recommendation .

Yes, but none over 6000 meters.

My son and I actually climbed 13 smaller points or mountains while there last December that ranged up to 5600 meters. For peaks much higher than that you will need a permit. Chhukhung (not to be confused with Chhukhung Ri) is the highest point you can trek to without a permit. It is 5930 meters (19,126') high.

Chhukung Ri itself is sometimes listed as a trekking peak, but apparently only in error. Kyazo Ri 6186 meters is the actually peak that was supposed to be listed, but apparently someone goofed on the website (or so we were told). According to the National Park, you don't need a special permit for Chhukung Ri, in fact from their office and for a few rupees you can purchase a certificate for climbing it.

Lakhpa Ri, Island Peak?

You will need a permit for those ones.

I was there in March 2007 and it was cold, damn cold! When we left Lobuche, heading towards Gorak Shep and EBC, it was -25ºc (-13ºf) not including windchill. My advice to you is to take along some very warm clothing and a good sleeping bag. Hopefully you won't need them, but if you do you'll be glad that you brought them along.

And take AndyJB444's advise: bypass EBC and climb Kalapatthar. The view of Mount Everest is much better from there. Actually, you can't see much of Everest from Base Camp.

Good Luck, Barry

Ha, I was there mid to late March 2007 and yes was super cold. Lhakpa and I were the only ones climbing Island Peak...brrr

I will be at EBC in November as well, hoping it wont be too cold.

IMHO, Best views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse are from Pumori ABC.

the weather is normally dry and the atmosphere clear so the views are superb.

You could do it more quickly, but 14 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu is comfortable.

What to take ? A willingness to be amazed ! very large digital camera memory card, and lots of batteries. Wet wipes. Antiseptic hand-wipe.
