Best mtn to climb near Vienna, Austria?

by 395guy » Tue Feb 04, 2014 5:17 pm

If you were in Vienna for a business trip and could take an extra few days to get your tail up a good mtn in the region, which one would it be?

Also, how much of a hassle would it be to get from Vienna to Chamonix to attempt Mont Blanc?

Any suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated. I know very little about traveling in Europe. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Btw, this would be in July... not the winter.

Regarding Montblanc, Vienna is at the extreme opposite corner of the alps; that is > 1.000 km by car so taking a plane to Geneva is the better option.
You need at least 4-5 days, one week would be better acclimatise & find a slot with suitable weather.
For a weekend or so I would say: 4get it.

Higher Mountains more accessible from Vienna i.e. by car or by public travel:
Großglockner (Austrias highest peak -> Heiligenblut),
Dachstein (--> Schladming)
Drei Zinnen (--> Sexten)
Triglav (--> Villach)
...
(all these should have a comprehensive SP page)

In general, for approach just try the google maps with "public transport" option.
Online maps for the peaks:

It really depends what you are looking for. Hiking/scrambling or mountaineering in highly glaciated terrain (which I would not recommend without a partner and sufficient experience). For hiking/scrambling there are great options fairly close to Vienna: Gesause, Hochschwab, Grosser Priel, Dachstein, Grimming. Near Salzburg (3 hours by car or train from Vienna) I can highly recommend Watzmann, Hochkalter, Hoher Goell. Plenty of significant elevation gain in spectacular settings with a number of different route options from trail to via ferrata. And of course nice alpine huts on the way where you can get good food and beverages.
