Climbing in Little Switzerland

by jharrwyo » Thu Mar 20, 2014 11:16 am

Planning a trip to the Pika Glacier in the Alaska Range first week of June. Weather permitting hopinf to do some alpine rock routes for several days. Wondered if anyone has been there at that time and what condition I can expect the glacier (crevasses) to be in. I know year to year is different but in general. Also what degree of bag would do and any other general beta a guy could use. Thanks a lot

I was there in early- to mid-June in 2011. It was perhaps a little warmer than usual. The Pika itself was in fantastic shape--no real openings yet, lots of good, thick snow bridges. The routes were a bit of a mess due to rockfall; it had been a light snow year. I was totally comfortable in a 15F bag and I generally sleep a little bit on the cold side.
