Abandoned Pages in Need of Adoption

by Bob Sihler » Fri Feb 07, 2014 9:18 pm

There are lots and lots of pages on this site that have been untended for a long time and whose owners have lost interest in the site. If you see an abandoned page in need of adoption, please report it here so that others who might be qualified to adopt the page can have a chance to find out.

What is an abandoned page in need of adoption? Generally, it is safe to assume that a page has been abandoned if the owner has been inactive for more than a year (check the user's profile page to see the date last active.)

What makes a page in need of adoption? Lacking essential information; lacking good photos, route diagrams, etc.; outdated or incorrect information.

Should you see a page here you would like to adopt, please reply in this thread or PM the elves.

Any peak that already has a "Needs Major Updates" vote *and* has not been attended to since *and* the owner is inactive, should be summarily thrown up for adoption.

Bob: I'll contact you with a PM regarding this.

There are lots of page in the Alps needing updates.
Here is one http://www.summitpost.org/becco-meridionale-della-tribolazione/152301
I've uselessly sent a PM to the owner, Gasgenova, since the last December. He's inactive since a lot of time. I climbed this peak twice.

Lots of pages also by om need serious updates, but the worst amongst those ones i've taken a look at is http://www.summitpost.org/dent-du-g-ant/150263. I climbed twice.
Also the area http://www.summitpost.org/brian-onnais/151459 is a poor page, only a simple list of mountains' names and lakes. I have a good acknowledge of this important area, highly frequented, having climbed different routes.
Thanks for your attention, Bob. Alberto

Bob, I would like to adopt Kennedy Peak. It was abandoned long ago. Overall, not a bad page, but it could use a few updates:

http://www.summitpost.org/kennedy-peak/151981

I would also like to adopt Strickler Knob. It needs some work and its author has not been on SP since July 2009:

http://www.summitpost.org/strickler-knob/486576

Additionally, Great North Mountain is listed as a mountain when it is more appropriately described as a range. I've already done pages for five summits in the range, and have plans to do several more in the near future. Then, I plan to do the range page:

Alberto, I've transferred the first of those pages to you because the owner is definitely inactive. However, the owner of the other two was last active on February 1 this year, so the proper thing is to ask him first or see if he's willing to make updates. He was not the creator of the first page (I don't know about the second one), so that gives us a little more leeway if he is unwilling to improve that page.

I transferred the first two to you. The owner of the third was active less than a month ago, so it would be proper to contact him first. He actually transferred some of his eastern pages to me a few years back and expressed a lack of interest in maintaining the other eastern ones, so my guess is he might be willing to transfer Great North Mountain to you and then you can reshape it as you wish.

Thanks, Bob. The owner of Great North Mountain had been away from SP for over two years, and I thought that he was gone. Glad to see that I can get in touch with him.

Thanks, Bob. I've seen, he does the log in. It's an old story...Some members are not willing to improve their pages, but don't want to lose those. I think that SP would take a great advantage if the problem will be solved.

Bob, I wouldn't mind adopting Red Mountain in the Butte Highlands of Montana. I was up there two years ago and plan on hiking up there again this summer to do a page for Table Mountain, the highpoint of Silver Bow County, Montana. To get to Table, I'll hike right over the summit of Red.

The user hasn't been active since 2007, and there is a route page tied to it that could use a little clearer detail as well. Particularly in the "getting there" section.

Thanks,
James

You're the new owner of both those pages. Thanks!

The Chachani page really needs to be adopted:

http://www.summitpost.org/chachani/151707

At one time, it may have been a good page, but everything concerning access has changed. The current owner is inactive and the page hasn't been updated since 2007.

A few examples of things that need to be fixed:

The getting there information is from 1999. The road to the old standard route is no longer in service and the old standard route has been mostly abandoned. The new standard route is via a new route from the south and the road is new as well.

The When to Climb section is actually pretty inaccurate. January through March are actually the wettest months and probably the least popular time to climb.

If anyone can give this page some TLC, it would be appreciated. I can help with the updates as well since I was just there.

Here is another page that is woefully outdated:

User http://www.summitpost.org/users/colonelpyat/335 seems to have been inactive since 2008.
I would like to take over the Mount Audobon page if possible as my first page on SP.

It's yours, and thanks for stepping up. That's an easy but very nice peak, and its page could use a facelift. Just be aware that when adopting a page, there's an expectation that the new owner will make some major changes soon or the page may become available again if someone else asks for it. :)

Thank you, Bob. I do more lurking than anything here but feel as if it's time to contribute where I can. Audubon was my first 13er and Indian Peak! I appreciate it and if I feel as if I'm not able to keep it up I will be sure to let you know.

Having climbed it, I wish to adopt the Pisco page. It's a beautiful mountain deserving an adeguate page.
