For what it's worth, I've had a somewhat similar issue... Here's my personal experience:

Size 9.5 street shoe with low volume and boney feet but a tall arch, got Scarpa Inverno plastics in size 11 with inserts (for some reason, it took size 11 for my toes not to hit the front in a kick test). After much pain, boot punching, and heel rise, it was just clear that the shape of the last was not working for my foot, and the boot was just too big.

Long story short, I went to a boot fitter in Shasta the day after a climb marred by painful feet was finally a breaking point with the plastics. I ended up getting fitted for the Spantik - the last shapes to my foot almost perfect, especially locking my heel in and gripping the back of my arch properly. We tried a few sizes and I went with a 42.5... Same as my street shoe size. Admittedly it had a slightly tight fit at first. But, that was only because we needed to do a heat mold on the liner So that the tight areas would become approriately compressed around the shape of my foot. A few hours later, they felt absolutely incredible, and perfect, no toe bang on repeated kick tests, almost no heel lift. I did some subsequent stress testing in them and my feet felt great the entire time. Shins were happy too!

And here I was thinking I needed to size up, even on a boot with a moldable liner.

So to answer your question with another question: is this tightness before or after the liner was molded? If before, it sounds the fit may be just right but needs a mold. If after the mold, likely too small.

PS it is possible the low volume and boney quality of my feet allowed me to get away with matching the boot to my street shoe size... But it might be worth working with a bootfitter to find the right size and, if a boot with a moldable liner, get it molded. Especially if you're running into same sort of fit trouble I have with shoes.

Indeed. I worked with Ben at 5th Season. Top-notch attention to detail in getting the right fit. Dropped in without a boot fit appointment, and he was willing to work with me for as long as it would take (took solid 4 hours) to find the right boot, the right size, the right insert, the right lacing adjustment, and a solid heat mold job. And went so far as to test a pair of the same crampons I had, from their stock room, just to ensure they were compatible with the boot. Worth the time and effort, and great service from them.
