Puna de Atacama - Feb' 07

Are there any SP members going to Puna de Atacama in February ?
If so, which summit do you plan, and when ?

Cheerio !

M - It seems you are planning to go many places

I might go to Ojos del Salado, but not sure. I will be in Antarctica until the end of January, so if I do go to Ojos it would be in the first two weeks of February.

I had planned to go last year, but we got delayed in Antarctica/Punta Arenas so by the time I got to Mendoza I was too tired and late and just climbed Aconcagua.

I had planned to climb from the Argentine side and enquired about transport. Johnson Reynoso quoted me around US$600 for a jeep into Ojos BC. With three people this would be OK. Problem is this time I would not be acclimatised before I got there, unless I climbed something near Mendoza first.

Incahuasi

Postby Andino » Sat Sep 16, 2006 7:42 am

Hi Damien,

In fact we're gonna be travelling around South America for 6 months, so we intend to climb volcanoes here and there.
I really would like to give a go at a summit in Puna de Atacama, and thought it might be fun to share the adventure with some other SP members.

However Ojos would take too many days for us... that's we thought about Incahuasi, maybe from Las Lozas (rather than Las Grutas), as there is water on the first part.
And if we haven't acclimatized enough there is Volcano San Francisco right nearby.

:?: You seem to be in touch with Jonson Renoso...
I try to send him an e-mail from his website, but no reply so far. Any idea how to reach him ?

:?: You are mentioning Antartica, is it easy to find boats from southern chile ?
Are they leaving from Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales ?
An idea of the price ? How many boats a week/month ?

Johnson - no, I can't even find his emails to me now. I think I got his contacts off Corax anyway ?

Antarctica - there is no cheap way to spend good time in Antarctica. Planes go from Punta Arenas - either US$29,000 for two weeks on Vinson :? Or $2,000 for two days on King George Island (flying DAP).

Ships go from Ushuaia in Argentina. Most of them are around $5,000 for two weeks cruising down the Peninsula, but sometimes if you hang around for a few days you can find one leaving soon that is not full and you can go for cheaper - maybe $2,000 ? This is a bargain, and as good as it gets.

Sometimes you hear stories about people getting on a Chilean Armada (Navy) or postal ship in Punta Arenas, but this does not really happen any more. It used to work years ago, I think it was even in the Lonely Planet guidbook, but they stopped it. I did meet a woman who got offered a place on the postal ship by the captain, drinking in a bar, but that's because she was a good-looking woman - so she wisely refused

Another rare option is to go around the docks in Punta or Ushuaia and find a small yacht that is going to Puerto Williams and maybe further. If you help as crew you could sail to Puerto Williams, trek the Navarino circuit, then get a DAP flight back to Punta.

To contact Jonson.
If this doesn't work, drop me a line. He has been updating his web site and I think he also has changed email address.

Damien, $600 to BC - you're going to attempt OdS from Chile then I guess?

Nope, that was from the town in Arg where he goes from. I thought it was a bit expensive for a short jeep ride. Didn't exactly increase my enthusiasm.

Hello Corax,

Thanks for the link to Jonson. That's the one I used a couple of weeks and got no reply.
I can't tell if it doesn' work or if Jonson has been really busy...
Any idea how to reach him otherwise ?

Gracias :)

I was just asking because you mentioned BC. No jeep can go to BC on the Argentinian side. The jeep ride offered is probably from Fiambalá, along the main road and then over the great plain and as far as a jeep can go into the Cazadero Grande canyon.

Myzantrope - you have a PM.
