Relating Area/Range pages

by Baarb » Fri Jan 20, 2012 3:20 am

Wondering if it's possible to Relate two Area/Range pages to each other? Or make one a Child of another one? To consider:

Chile/Argentina Lake District Area/Range: http://www.summitpost.org/lake-district ... ina/307837
Patagonia Area/Range: http://www.summitpost.org/patagonia/171078
'The Frey' Area/Range: http://www.summitpost.org/the-frey/518464
'Cerro Catedral' Mountain: http://www.summitpost.org/cerro-catedral/151997 (with no coordinates / mapability)

Physically, Cerro Catedral is a peak in The Frey area which itself is (for most purposes) in the Lake District and Patagonia (like nearby Osorno http://www.summitpost.org/volc-n-osorno/152059). Edit: It turned out that the Cerro Catedral page was about the area rather than the high point and so was a duplicate in essence.

Currently on SP, Cerro Catedral is listed under Patagonia only, while The Frey has no attachments in any direction. I don't know if it's better to make Cerro Catedral a Child of The Frey and Lake District (so 3 Parent ranges total) or to just have it under Frey, so that if more peaks in The Frey area had pages, they wouldn't all have to be listed under 3 different Area/Range names. But then could The Frey be set as a Related Object or Child to Lake District and/or Patagonia? (It's otherwise hard to find if you don't go to Lake District and then click the 'Nearby Areas & Ranges' button or go via a small selection of photos.) Most of the relevant authors haven't been around in a while so I figured the forum might be a better spot to gauge views. Perhaps there are similar unclear groupings elsewhere on SP. Cheers.

It's possible to attach items as related. It's also possible for someone to make a page for a broader area and then attach areas as children.

Since you say most of the authors are inactive, I'm happy to help with the attachments process, but as I don't know the area, I need some very clear input and guidelines from those who do.

I've been to all these places and in lieu of any better suggestions I think the easiest thing would be, given what happens elsewhere on SP, to make 'The Frey' Area a Child of 'Lake District' and 'Patagonia', and make 'Cerro Catedral' just a Child of 'The Frey' (instead of 'Patagonia' as present). Edit: It turned out that the Cerro Catedral page was about the area rather than the high point and so was a duplicate in essence. The Cerro Catedral stuff got integrated in The Frey stuff instead.

I say this with the anticipation that 'The Frey' gets redeveloped and expanded by someone to cover much more of the Nahuel Huapi National Park within which it sits. Lots of mountains, climbs, treks, huts to write about etc. Personally I could add a couple of route pages. maps and logistics but not too much. There may be existing SPers who have been to these places but haven't yet noticed a framework to which to contribute to. Better linking of pages and maybe a forum thread could inspire some progress.

This is another Area (by the same author) which could do with being made a Child of 'Lake District' and 'Patagonia' given its borderline position and lack of other attachments:

Thanks.

I've got a mountain page that is a child of another mountain page. There's a lot of flexibility with these types of thing. The one item I try to avoid is using 'Related', as this seems to cause the parents to not be displayed on profile pages in summit logs and your mountain list.
