Road and snow conditions for rock creek?

by DR » Mon Feb 22, 2016 7:00 pm

Hey everyone! I'm planing on snowshoeing to to Bear Creek spire and Mt. Abbot area on 3/2. Does anyone know where the road is closed and have info on the snow conditions? Pictures would be great, thanks!

I was up on Feb 15th, the road is plowed up to the Sno Park lot (the lot is not plowed) people parked on both sides of the road. There was full coverage on the road from this point on. Sorry I don't have any pics.

BTW my friends were up this past Friday.

Im told the conditions were the same, road closed at Sno Park with coverage on the road from there up.

It has however been pretty warm lately was in 50's in Mammoth yesterday.

The road is gated at the sno-papark. From there it is patchy for the first half mile, then solid coverage. The county will plow the road to the pack station (one mile below Mosquito Flats) by the the 10th of April. Plenty of snow up there. Enjoy!

I went up Rock Creek today -- the gate at the snow park was closed. Big machines were clearing the road all the way to Rock Creek Lakes Resort - should be open soon. Temp was 28 degrees at dawn, but when the sun hit I had to strip down to a t-shirt. Made it up to about 11,000', where the slope was too steep for my ski skills, and the snow too soft for boots. Should have taken snow shoes.

Thanks for the beta, guys.

If anyone who goes up into the valley anytime soon could get some pics of Mt. Dade and Abbott, that would be much appreciated.

Here's a photo of Abbot/Dade/Bear Creek Spire from 4/1. The road is now plowed and open to the horse packing station, shown in the previous photo. However more snow is forecast this weekend.

Resurrecting this old thread for 2017! Anyone know the conditions of Rock Creek Rd, the campground road at Rock Creek Lake, and/or Mosquito Flats TH?

How about snow coverage/elevation? I assume it's mostly/all snow starting at Mosquito Flats?

I was up there a few days ago, and the road was gated at the Pack Station, which is a mile below Mosquito Flat. From the gate is was patchy snow to the trailhead, then becomes mostly snow at Mack Lake. Check the Inyo National Forest website for campground info.

Will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next two weeks. I'm planning to backpack into the Pioneer Basin end of June.
