I run a good bit. My dad was an amazing runner, running several marathons, fastest of which was 2:12. He was planning to go to the olympics in Moscow in 1980 (year the US boycotted, but he was going for Mexico). He had succeeded in one of two trials when he got hit by a car, popped a lung, emergecy lung surgery, etc... I guess he got me into running. He's still in great shape, but doesn't run like before, messed up knees. But he still hikes a lot, rock climbs, mountaineers, white-water rafts. He's gotten me into it all. Lately he's really gotten into white water kyaking, something i would be also, except for college has been getting in the way. )-=

Anyway, i am still no where near what my dad has been when it comes to running. I haven't run my first marathon yet, but have run 5 half-marathons, two of them races (CSUMB half-marathon). Last year i placed 22'nd (first official race i've done in five years) with a time of 1:34:00.
This year i placed 18'th in the same race with a time of 1:30:20. I usually run 4 or 8 miles, often with a lot of hills. Little injuries like achilles tendenitis (sp?) have been common, but heel-lifts work well to remedy that. I want to run a marathon soon, maybe the Big Sur next year (if i'm still in CA). I run to be in shape for the mountains, for the fun of it, to relax...many reasons. But lately i've been finding it hard to run as consistently, with no partner, and its been ever so long since i've been able to "reward" my running with a trip to the mountains. I'm taking it easy now with finals, but i will pick it up again very soon, with ust a couple week break.

For mountain runners here is a website that should interest you. http://www.mountainspeedclimbing.org/ Imagine getting to the top of Mt Ranier in less than five and a half hours to win a $500 bet

Adventurer, I shall see you there...no worries for the time! Its the experience...and trust me, I'd be happy to land a 4:30!
As for shoes, I loved the Saucony Hurricanes...then they changed the style on me this year. :-( Now I'm running in the Asics Kayanos...my feet are surrounded in clouds. :-)

Cy., that's a curious site. Is it run by Dan Howitt? I noticed several pictures of him and his dog.

I ran into a guy called Charley Engel yesterday who ran the Skyline trail in 2 hours and 58 minutes - 8400 ft of elevation gain in 11 miles. www.runtheplanet.com

Hey Cy. Charley is a friend of mine. He was living in North Carolina... Is he living out here now? I crewed for his team in the Race Across America (bike race) in 2003. He has done Denali as well as several Eco-Challenges.
Did you find out where he is living? or what he was doing out here? I'd love to see him if he is on the west coast now.

I dont know if Charlie is living out here. He promised to e mail me, but so far I did not get a reply. I will let you know as soon as he contacts me. He is living the life that I can only dream about.

Ah. I'll bet he was simply out here racing. He's got a beautiful home back east and I can't imagine him leaving... unless he's involved in filming projects (which he was.) Thanks.

had some nice runs this week. Couple of days ago I ran along the river bank in the evening with a friend. After about 30 minutes I enterred a state of real tranquility, sort of meditative, just my breathing, the view in front, my feet and the sound of our running shoes. It was fantastic! What was really something, he had the same feeling at the same time, really cool! DId the hilly course last night, hard work but also very satisfying.

I wish I could get into the groove of running, you know the "state of real tranquility" Charles talked about. I just slog along, aiming at fitness.
