Uh-oh. That's my house. I'm in CO right now, looking for more info...

Steve,

I'm located in Sparr Heights. I think they got on this one quickly. I never saw it or any reporting on it. This morning the entire C.V. is an inversion layer of smoke from the ACH - Station Fire. Very very eerie. There is no wind so the smoke has just laid down. Ash is everywhere.

If things change I'll p.m. you

Not a fun ride to work. It's smokey here in the east valley. Rode from Northridge to Sun Valley. Not bad until I got to the 405. Then it was crappy breathing the rest of the way. :P

Played leapfrog with the bus and won. Smoke be damned. :)

Is hiking up Mt. Baldy tomorrow (Saturday) ill-advised?

Looking at the Baldy webcam, it seems pretty fine there. I'll drive up and just come back if the air is bad.

I've been checking frequently this morning. Just gets worse each time. Snowing ash down in the SFV. :P

Edit:Good timing. I just moved from Tujunga on the west side of Mt Lukens. It would be hell for my asthma up there tonight.

They shut down the SanGabriel NF. Closed to all visitors until these conditions let up.

I guess that hike to the hut is off for Saturday. :(

Spider I am reading the order differently:

As a result of extreme fire activity, and to protect public health and safety, Angeles National Forest officials are implementing a forest closure of San Gabriel Canyon, effective 2:00 p.m. today. The closure will last until the Morris fire has been fully contained.

Individuals or organizations holding special use permits for sanctioned activities within the Forest are exempt from this order.

While the closure is in effect, going into or being upon National Forest System lands, roads, or trails within the closure area is not allowed. The closure will affect the use of all national forest recreational facilities, roads and hiking trails. A violation of the closure order is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.

The closure area includes California State Highway 39, Glendora Mountain Road (GMR) and East Fork Road (2N39), in addition to other Forest Service roads will remain closed to the public.

I think we can also safely assume the ACH 2 out of La Canada will be closed and probably Big Tujunga Canyon access (Don't know this officially)

Chances are Baldy area activites will probably still be a safe bet. Smokey and hot as hell for sure!

Seems to me like the Mt Baldy Rd is open?

Caltrans shows parts of the 2 being closed.

Two nights ago, I saw it from the top of Topanga Canyon - looked like freakin' Mordor!!! The flames could be seen clearly, as well as the huge silhouette of the Verdugo Mountains cast in garish red and brown. I nearly crashed my car into the guard-rail I was so shocked.

The eastern boundary of the closure is roughly on a line running north-south from Chantry Flats (road closed to there) through Chilao. Forget anything west of there unless you are a fire fighter. Road to Baldy is apparently still OK. An unverified report from a USFS contact is that the CHP was going to close Hwy 2 just west of Wrightwood (Big Pines) so access to places like Baden Powell might be restricted, too. Baldy might be the only game in town for the Angeles National Forest.

Smokey hell in the east valley. No better than yesterday or the the day before appearently. I had to go up to Tujunga one last time yesterday and it was bad. I had no idea what I was headed for. Smoke thicker than fog and raining ash. The fire station down on Foothill was a bee hive. There' must have been 20 fire trucks staged there.

My boss , lives in west of HWY 2 was evacuated over the weekend but has been allowed back to his home. He's staying home today.

Been at home with no internet or tv over the weekend. need to catch up on what's burning .

Here's a neat map...shows active and past fires for California...It's big so i'm just giving the link

I some the giant mushroom clould all the way from the beach yesterday. Wow, looked like a volcano eruption!!!

On a side note, I went up the skihut trail on Saturday and it was fine. Not even a slight smell of smoke.
