No idea. I haven't looked into it.
reboyles wrote:Sorry guys but everyone I know is still complaining about the server speed. I've been dumped so many times during photo uploads I just expect it now. Some of my by buds have given up and are considering other options like moving their content elsewhere. I would can your current ISP and move the service if this were my site. The site performance has been getting worse all year on our end and it has become almost impossible to get anything done. I am a retired IT professional but I won't go off on this board because I like SP too much. I was on the receiving end of messages like this for almost 20 years so I know what it's like to get complaints. Please look into this because some people will just go away and never return when their frustration level reaches a certain point. The preview of this message just took 4 minutes to ccomplete...

Interesting. I've experienced no slowness with regards to navigating pages, posting to the forums, etc., since before the changes nearly two weeks ago. I have read one other post (not sure if it was also from you) about slowness during photo uploads, but that isn't necessarily indicative of any problem with the site because there are many reasons for photo uploads to take a long time.

It would help immensely with speed of upload if photos were resized before uploading them. Uploading a photo right off the camera is waste of disk space and time. Most photos off of even a middle range camera are 3-4mb. Even on a high speed internet connection, that's going to take some time to upload.

With regards to it taking 4 minutes to preview your post, as mentioned before, I haven't experienced anything like that since before the changes a couple weeks ago. And there haven't been many people posting that they're still experiencing slowness either (I only remember one person mentioning it when uploading photos and another when logging in), while a few are saying that they've noticed a significant improvement. Perhaps your 4 minute wait to preview had something to do with your connection and not the server. Not all delays on the internet are caused by the destination server.

You're right about the photo resizing, Matt. I resize all my pics for SP except those few with route details where higher res is important.
With the social networking stuff it's perhaps the slow old computer at my work which can't cope with connecting with SP, FB, T and G at the same time, cos at home it doesn't slow me down. I still hate those features though and if they are here to stay, I would vote at least for making them less in your face, placed more discreetly instead of on top of every page. It's not only my opinion AFAIK.
But anyway thanks for your great work for SP as usual, Matt :)
Cheers,
Kamil

I agree. Matt don't you think having these features at the top of every mountain, route, and photo page might be excessive? Couldn't you meet the desired objective by placing it someplace appropriate on the home page but not everywhere else?

If it must be on the other pages, perhaps it could be moved to the column on the left on the main object pages, down where the ads are.

I've been trying to sign on for the last 30-45 mins. whenever I was logged in, I could not see the reply windows. so I logged out/in again, only to wait maybe 3-5 mins to actually log in and then the same thing would happen.

is it just me, or is anyone else having this problem?

Log in time has varied for me. Earlier today it took 4-5 minutes to log in. This evening it took less than 5 seconds. It seems pretty random.

That happens all the time for me. Not the having to do it repeatedly immediately, but SP is always 50% logging me off mid-session and I have to log out and log in again.

I log in to stay logged in, and as a browse around at random times I will stop seeing off-route, reply options in forums, and get messages to stop cheating when trying to vote on a page. Logging out and back in corrects it, but only temporarily and it starts all over again.

Others see this? What is the cause Matt? This has been going on for over a couple months now, you may not have noticed if you haven't been online browsing around for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Yesterday I was editing a pic caption. It took so much time that I had to leave it. The server speed is very slow at AM hours in Spain

Looks like I need to look into this to see what might be causing the slowness logging in. It's unacceptable to have to wait more than a few seconds to log in.

I stay permanently logged in, and I come back to the site numerous times over the course of the day and even over the course of weeks and I yet to have seen this problem, which makes it hard to track down. However, I am rarely on the site for more than 15 or 20 minutes at a time. Here is my theory as to why someone would get "half" logged out: there are actually two cookies being set when you log in, one for the forum and one for the main part of the site. I believe that the forum also uses sessions (in addition to cookies), which might be expiring and causing the problem of not being able to post a reply to the forums. But then it doesn't make much sense to me why I haven't ever encountered it given the fact that I almost never log out. I'm not really sure how the phpBB sessions work, but I vaguely remember setting them to never expire.

Diego is right. Little edits (like fixing a typo in picture caption) can be just as slow or slower than uploading a 4MB picture--the kind of slow where you go off, make a cup of coffee, load the dishwasher, come back, and it's still not done. But this is not consistent--sometimes text edits are pretty much instantaneous, the way they used to be. I don't have any theories about the explanation--I'm just reporting it.

The same thing happened to me (mid-morning), but it only took me 5 seconds to log in the second time. Seems to be faster in the evening ..

I just waded through the login code and made a fairly significant change. I was experimenting with logging in and out repeatedly and it was taking over a minute sometimes just to log in. After I made the change, it seems to repeatedly take about 4 seconds or so to log in. Hopefully the slow login issue is fixed.

I'd love to hear feedback from people about their log in times. And if for some reason you can't log in to post to this thread (I could have broken something with the change), send an email to webmaster@summitpost.org and I'll get back to you.

Yesterday evening, I uploaded three photos in succession. The first two took about five minutes each. The third took less than a minute. I've noticed similar inconsistencies on other days recently. I've also noticed a lot of double images posted lately. Like chugach mtn boy, I have no theories and am just reporting.

As far as site speed with everything else goes, the only issues I've had in recent days have been due to the connection. But when the connection is weak, it seems that SP is slower to load than other sites and more likely to not load at all, for whatever reason.

I have not been able to upload pictures or anything to SP for a while because it takes so long. I just tried uploading a single picture and left it for about 3 hours. It was still loading when I came back so I just gave up on it! It has been this way for a while and has made it so I can't contribute to the site any more. I'd like to be able to upload without it taking most of the day to do. Is this because of the server speed? I don't have problems on other sites.
