Has anyone climbed in Slovenia? What is it like in the Triglav (?) national park? Camping?

I guess you'll wish you hadn't asked. Vid, Bor and Velebit have put up almost each bump in the <a href="http://www.summitpost.org/show/mountain_link.pl/mountain_id/2593"><b>Julian Alps</b></a>. There are countless subgroup pages from which you can jump to the single mountain pages. All in all about 60 pages...

I've spent a couple of holidays hill-walking in slovenia and I can't praise it too highly. It's a fantastic place. Great walks. I'd like to meet the guy/girl that marks the routes and shake his/her hand. They do a great job.

As far as I know, you're not allowed to camp in the Triglav Nat Park. During the summer and early autumn though, there are large numbers of mountain huts open. I think some have winter quarters too, but I could be corrected.

I was in Bohinj 3weeks ago and visited the top of Vogel, only 1922 meters i think, but very nice all the same. The national park and town of Ribcev Laz are both very nice. In fact, the whole region is nice and the largest city nearby, Bled, has a nice Chinese restaurant if you like that kind of food. It will be a return destination for me for Triglav.

Many thanks! I do surf the pages but it is always useful to get some other impressions. After several years of climbing in the crowded western Alps, I am looking for someplace a little more on the wild side. Is it true you cannot camp in Triglav Nat Park?

Chris, in National park you can't camp. Yes for emergency reasons, but you can't stay below let's say Triglav north wall for more days. Perhaps on some more remote places if you'd hide your tent. But there are many camping places in main valleys, so coming with a car it's not a problem to be under the wall in an hour. And there are mountain huts and free bivouacs.

I don't know what kind of climbing you're really looking for. Popular high walls are not so lonesome as you might think. But they are not crowded as in Dolomites, for example. There are also wild areas where you will not meet anyone. But are they worth a hard climb? But if you're coming regularly in Alps, yes, why not trying Julian Alps!

Vid, Bor or anyone else : what about winter climb in Slovenia, I would like to come there in January have five winter days in my Aconcaqua training plan - so what are you sugesting?

Hi, Mile! This is a tough question. I'm not a climber myself, but you should first say what kind of difficulties you're looking for. Our best climbers were training for Himalayas in winter Julian Alps. They become very hard in winter. On the other hand, the character of winter ascents in Julian Alps can be much different than the character of Aconcagua.

Mile: which kind of winter climb are you inrested in? How hard? I can help you with some inormation but you must be more exacted that I know what to suggest you. So are you looking for harder climbs, normal winter approaches, ice falls... Just ask!

So exactly I’m looking for normal winter approaches, just to experience solid snow on my foot, cold, and maybe some camping in winter conditions. (all this combined with visit to some very dear person in Slovenia:). So no ice falls. I know that it's a different character than Aconcaqua but I thing that I need some winter experience.

I suggest you that you just check as many pages as you can from Slovenian mountains and just pick out the most interesting for you. All needed information is on the page.

If you need sth. more just ask.

Does anyone know if there's a winter hut open around Koca pod Bognatin (not sure thats the correct spelling) in the week after christ,mas?

I think that neither Koca pod Bogatinom, neither Dom na Komni (15 min away) has a winter room. So, no possibility for free sleeping in winter there. They will be opened for Christmas, for further info about Koca pod Bogatinom call: +386 (0)4 57 23 213.
