Had planned on climbing Split with my son this weekend. Anyone with any knowledge of current conditions?

In the last two weeks we've had two minor snow storms. At night, in the Owens Valley (Bishop and Big Pine, 4000 feet elevation), temperatures have dropped to almost freezing. However, it's supposed to warm up considerably next week. Winds are a concern, as the exposure on your approach to Split is constant and the winds can be brutal.
The best local weather forecasts are: Mammoth Weather, Howard Sheckter. Mammoth Lakes is about 7000 to 8000 feet elevation.
How well equipped are you and your son ?? I assume you are ascending the easy route,...

If heading up the standard east side trail, be sure to heed the advice written there (on the sign, below John Muir's picture) about where the trail actually starts, a bit to the north of the sign, at the spring.
