Summit on the Summit

Check out the latest banner ad running at the top of most SP pages; Summit on the Summit.

There's an interesting cast of performers, including Jessica Biel, going to climb Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and money for global clean water. So, where do I sign up for this trip?!

My favorite is the surname Fiasco.

The site design is pretty cool, and I love the concept of having all the tweets/blog posts show up on the altitude meter

It's a cool website, but I'm going to go cynical on this.

If they want any money or sympathy from me then they should use their time actually giving someone clean water. Why not go to Africa to dig a well or lay a water pipe to a slum? Why do they have to climb a mountain? Isn't that a waste of their time when the time could be spent more effectively?

This has actually never happened but if someone walks into my office and wants financial support to travel to Nepal to work 3 months for free for an NGO, I'd pay his plane ticket. On the spot! But if someone walks in and wants me to donate an amount of money cause he's going to Nepal for 3 months doing a "climb for charity expedition", he'll get kicked out.

That's a fair point Chewy. I wonder though how much media attention they'd get for digging a well though. Climbing Kili, though hardly a significant mountaineering feat, will draw a lot more attention to the cause and therefore probably raise more money. It is afterall, the posterchild for melting glaciers. And when the glaciers are gone, the whole eco system around Kili will change drastically. Thus there is a connection with clean water.

At any rate, their intent is good.

What celebrities usually do is travel to Africa, hold an AIDS sick baby for 2 minutes while pictures are taken, and then travel back home.

In this case Jessica Biel and the others could have done 2 weeks of actual work in the slums of Dar e Salaam or Nairobi. That would have given them both a lot of publicity and credibility. We're talking dirt under their nails and they could have had a web-site showing their daily progress in whatever they were try to build, dig or install. Instead they are going for the US/European tourist approach and climb a mountain.

Why is base camp at sea level? And why is there so much technology and beeping on that mountain? I've seen more pure climbing on Star Trek. My cynical $.02

If they wanted to make a statement, they would climb K2, and the survivors would be congratulated!

Yeah they should be climbing Mt Kenya. I'd like to see how Biel and the like cope with the vertical basalt columns of Batian!!

Owell I guess its better than them sitting home in their plush houses spending their millions.......
