Swearing technique

Postby Arthur Digbee » Mon Oct 25, 2010 4:58 pm

OK, I'm not sure this will best fit under "technique," but let's see how it goes.

I was a klutz on several occasions this weekend, including getting a lightly sprained ankle. On each klutzy occasion, I found myself yelling "sh*t!"

Obviously there were other options. But for some reason I kept falling back on that one.

Do you prefer to rely on a single all-purpose swear word, or do you mix it up?

I could do without the foul language. It's unbecoming.

I find that an intense burst of foul language is an important first step in the healing process of any injury.
For example: If you twist your ankle so badly that you cannot walk, a simple G*D*M*F*S*O*B* will put you on the road to recovery. You can actually feel the pain drain out of the affected limb if you put your heart into your cussing.

Rather it be while hiking/climbing, skiing or whatever, for me at least it is almost always spontaneous. Whatever word or words come out, I don't first think of what swear words are appropriate. So with that said, they could be any of the following: Shi!, Fvck, Mother Fu##er, You Pr1ck, Azzwipe, Rocksucker, Fing Idiot, etc.

Me too.

So why am I in such a rut? How can I improve my technique?

You need to drink a little more before you hike, much more during and then consume a whole lot more
after you summit. Alcohol is a cure all. You will find the swearing goes away and you'll start using words
like "dang", "shoot", or "oh nuts". Cheers!

Thanks, splattski, it reminds me of Sihler's insult thread.

I realize this thread is for fun, but it reminded me of something somebody told me once. He said when you are walking in the woods and start to fall, if you yell something out suddenly your ab muscles will tighten which will engage your core and may keep you from an all out fall. He called it "Cursing your fall."
That being said whenever I fall and cuss about it is the moment someone comes around the switchback and sees me, no matter how deserted the area has been for the entire day or how graceful I have been up to that point.

For those who don't speak English as a first language, I highly recommend reading English as a Second F*cking Language: How to Swear Effectively, Explained in Detail with Numerous Examples Taken From Everyday Life

Even for native speakers it's pretty interesting from a linguistic perspective :-)

Watching British sitcoms seems to have helped with my cursing/insult-hurling creativity as well. Black Adder & Red Dwarf especially
