I dont recall exactly what I was looking for but somehow during one my many internet searches I ended up here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball%27s_Pyramid

Climbing this has to be one of the most amazing experiences to be had in the world!

Very impressive peak indeed, and climbed later than most (all?) 8000'ers. Interesting with the population of stick insects of a species presumed extinct. With only 24 of them, there must be some heavy inbreeding.

I can assume a volcanic stack would be horrible to climb.

Take bets on how long until it gets bolted?

Lots of logistical problems to surmount.

I'd like to climb an iceberg sometime like this one I lensed off Labrador in 2007.

Climbing on Ball's Pyramid is prohibited isn't it?
There's a nice section on it in one of Venable's book if I'm not mistaken.

"Climbing was banned in 1982 under amendments to the Lord Howe Island Act, and in 1986 all access to the island was banned by the Lord Howe Island Board. In 1990 the policy changed to allow some climbing under strict conditions, which in recent years has required an application to the relevant state Minister"

I posted a topic about Ball's a few years ago. The actual climbing quality would be terrible, it would be climbing on bird crap on loose rock, but the experience would be totally worth it.
