Hey there fellow climbers. On Aug 21, 2017 a total eclipse of the sun will be passing over the central Idaho mountains. People from all over the world have been booking rooms for this event and many of us Idaho climbers have plans to be sitting on top of a summit when it occurs. Check it out.

What will it look like in Arizona, Bob ? (Or, should I just be content with frying eggs on the sidewalk?)

I think you'll still be frying eggs down there. Arizona is quite a ways from the center line.

I heard some farmer is letting his field be used for a gathering near Madras, Oregon. It kind of sounds like a cross between Woodstock and the Burning Man thing. I think I'll find a quiet summit here in Idaho and enjoy the show.

If you are going to do any traveling along the potential eclipse route, especially in the west where the eclipse will be the longest (2 mins +) - just a word to the wise ... we were looking to book a hotel in Wyoming close to the path (Jackson, WY, Driggs, ID, Dubois, WY, etc.) and by the end of August this year, the closest hotel we could find was about 4 hours north in Montana. There may be other options like the post above where folks open up their ranches and yards but if you are looking for a hotel, flights and rental cars, you might want to look now and not wait.

Yikes! I can't wait to see the photos of the madhouse on the Grand Teton that day. Gotta find a slightly more obscure peak...

In Idaho, Mt Borah (the tallest peak in Idaho) is in the direct path. It's normally crowded up there in August so I can't imagine what it'll be like next year. My friends in the Idaho SAR are probably dreading this one.

But, the good thing about Idaho is there is a lot of public land and dirt camping is permitted just about everywhere. In fact, many of us prefer to camp outside of the pay campgrounds.
