This is indeed very sad news.
11-30 am Vitaly Gorelik passed away in BC, from pneumonia and cardiac insufficiency. The emergency evacuation by hely couldn't been organized because of strong storm over all northern Pakistan during four days... and hely couldn't fly to K2 bottom.. Despite the best efforts of doctor Serguey Bychkovsky, they failed to save Vitaly.
Vitaly was one of the greatest Russian alpinist. He had some of the most technical and challenging climbs under his belt like K2 West Face Direct (2007), new route on Pobeda Peak (http://www.russianclimb.com/sokolov_gorelik_pobeda.html) Gorelik and his partner Sokolov were nominated for Piolet d’Or in 2009.
