Depending just who you believe they were about 10m below it and 30m from it, horizontally. To me, that is too far from the summit to say they summited. Summits on Manaslu, Lhotse, G2 and other peaks have been denied for less distance than that. Personally I don't care about a metre or three, especially if it's dangerous, but beyond 5m vertically? Hmm. There are some issues with this climb though, in terms of record-keeping (for those interested in such things - and I'm not saying anyone should be).

Summit certificates are irrelevant to me personally, and are no reliable record of anything in Himalayan climbing in general.

So why did you ask me about what I think about this topic? Seems like we are in agreement about this one anyways...

Because you were so vehement about just 1m not being good enough in Cosmin's situation, I wondered how you thought about 10m in this one, when clearly a lot of other people don't have a problem with it. I find different interpretations of the same facts to be interesting, in general as well as in climbing.

My interpretation is fairly easy to get. Either you stand on top, or you don't stand on top (for whatever reason). It is a proud thing to avoid summiting because you have respect for local traditions, but than don't claim you HAVE summited (especially when you made a point that you stopped a meter short of the summit). Climbing is a personal thing and I believe cosmin should be very proud of his accomplishment. No one will take that away, and that's the only thing that really matters. Not some dickheads bickering about it on the internet...

[quote="Vitaliy M."] Sounds like they have summited. Even though I did not read the whole report (no time). quote]

Vitaliy, I love ya dude, but c'mon. 'I didn't read the article on which I'm about to comment because I don't have the time, but check out the link to my blog below where I talk about my own stuff'? Go back and read that sh*t (which talks about how they stopped significantly below the very top due to snow conditions) before The Chief gets on here and we get a lecture on how BITD we didn't have blogs, we had to spray in person, etc. etc.

WillP, the link to my blog is in my signature, and has nothing to do with my comment. I care less to read that shit. Both of you said they stopped 30M bellow the summit. I have no clue why it counts as one. But can care less. It is their climb/their experience/their achievement.

Happy climbing to you all.
