Austrian Skiers Bid On Caroline Face
11:06 am, 07 Nov 2006
Two Austrian skiers hope to be the first to ski down the icy, avalanche-prone Caroline Face on Mt Cook.
The attempt has been likened to trying to stay upright on a pane of glass tilted on a 55 degree angle.
Andy Salek, from Queenstown-based company Making Movies which plans to film the bid, says the pair will climb the east ridge of the mountain adjacent to the Caroline Face before attempting the run.
Mr Salek says they will be carrying ropes and may abseil down part of the face if there is too much ice, and ski the rest of the way.
He says experts will be on hand in case things go wrong and the skiers will abandon their run if there is any doubt about the weather or the avalanche risk.
