Hi together,

looks like this is my first post here, so I want to introduce myself quickly.

I am from Germany, did some rock, ice and glacier courses in the Alps and trips in Norway/Svalbard. This year I was climbing several peaks around 6000m in the Himalayas, including Island Peak South ridge in alpine style, since it was off season (but guided of cause). My physical fitness/endurance is solid from doing quite some Marathons, Triathlon and Ultra. But technically I do not consider myself as a very experienced mountaineer, but I am certainly above entry level.

Now it looks like I will be in New Zealand/Dunedin very soon, so I want to connect it with some climbing in the first week of October. From what I read it might be slightly early. I was looking into Earnslaw, Aspiring and Cook, but have no feeling how conditions look like by this time and in general. So since I do not come to the other side of the globe every day, the question is would it be possible to do Mt Cook with a guide at this time and my skill level? Second choice would be Mt Aspiring.

I would be thankful for any advise. If anybody can recommend a guide or wants to join me you are welcome.

As a general rule, the weather in the Southern Alps is more unstable in spring and early summer than it is later in the summer.

But that's only a very rough guide. The main range is just a few kilometres from the sea and there's nothing but sea between you and Argentina. Expect the unexpected.

I'll be over there in late November/early December to have a crack at Mt Earnslaw with another SP member so if you're still in the area..........
