It's important that people who comes to climb in Valle D'Aosta understands that Mountain Rescue there is one of the best, most professional around, and medical facilities top notch if one is so unlucky to need them.... BUT this is a territorial EMERGENCY service, not some sort of tourist service on a "no question asked" basis, like some people see the Chamonix rescue. In other words, you call 118 if you need help, not if you decide that you don't really want to walk back in the valley - it's NOT a mountain cab!

The rules are that if you're hospitalized the rescue is free, but if you had to be rescue because of negligence or similar, you'll pay, and the cost of a rescue is not small And if someone decide you didn't really need to call 118 you may be left to your own devices (it has already happened), or, in extreme cases, you may be denounced to local authorities for "procurato allarme" (something like "to simulate an emergency that didn't really happen"), a serious charge.
