Does anyone have recomendations for Hotels or Hostels in Zermatt?

I'll be there in August
I do not want to spend more than $70 per night.


Plus, has anyone taken the train from Geneva to Zermatt.
How is this?
How long does it take?
Is it easy to get around if you only speak english?

I was in Zermatt about a year ago. We stayed at a little hostel on the river, just for the weekend. It was 33CHF per night. The bunk beds were warm and they had hot showers.

I had no problems w/ the language barrier. Because it is a tourist town, most people speak english.

We traveled by train the whole way. The swiss train system is clean and efficent. According to the Train Timeable (reminder it is a year old) Trains leave from Geneve to Zermatt every hour. It looks like a four hour journey with a breif stop in Visp.

I've also stayed in the Matterhorn Hostel for several times and will do so this summer as well. It's propably the cheapest place to stay in Zermatt and it really is pretty good. The staff usually consists of enthusiastic skiers etc. so they eagerly will give You info on spots and the conditions.

From Geneva Airport to Zermatt it takes about 4 hours. Train to Visp, then transfer to train to Zermatt.

Trains in Europe are very easy to use and if you get stumped, just ask.

Today the dominant languages in Zermatt are English and Japanese.

Switzerland as a whole is expensive but with a little planning and thought you can get by about as cheaply as in the US. Zermatt itself is crowded and expensive but the villages down the valley are cheaper and less crowded. The public transportation is good with something going up the valley every hour, so depending on what you want to do, you don't have to actually stay in Zermatt. Even Brig is close enough for day trips up there.

The cost is around 40-50 CHF per night, but that includes an awesome multi-course dinner (salad, soup, juice, dinner, dessert) and a full breakfast.

The rooms are really spacious and have at most 4 people, so crowding is never a problem. On many nights, I had the room totally to myself. And the hostel is one of the nicest that I've stayed at anywhere.
