Fred and I posted some pages for non technical peaks near Grindelwald that you may want to consider.

Kandersteg is a town that sits on the rail line between Berner Oberland and Brig. It's easy to go to all sorts of places from there (It is the International Scouting Center), has a lot of camping and the rates for accommodations are very reasonable.

I'm going to Switzerland - Bernese Oberland - at the end of October. Looking to do non-technical hikes and I wonder what the snow-cover will be like around 3000m? I'm a fit experienced mountain walker.
