I have the 16th-26th of May free before I start a course in Munich and thought I'd see if anybody would be interested in partnering up for some climbs in the Eastern Alps. Grossglockner, Ortler, Hochfeiler, Wildspitze, et al sound appealing. I like climbing AD type routes, but easier routes are good too, especially with new people! Any advice on good peaks would be appreciated too.

If I end up without a partner, what mountains would be safe solos and have easy access without a car?

I'll also have weekends free throughout June if anyone is in Munich and wants to do something relatively close by.

Thanks!
-Casey

I think mvs and charles are the right ones to ask as they are living in or close to Munich. You'll have the whole world to choose from and I wouldn't focus only on the highest mountains. From Munich Wilder Kaiser and Wettersteingebirge are closest and probably even most impressive. Karwendel lies in between and Allgäu further east. All these ranges can be easily reached without car - Kufstein for Wilder Kaiser, Garmisch Partenkirchen for Wetterstein, Mittenwald or Innsbruck for Karwendel and Oberstdorf for the Allgäu Alps have good train connections and are located directly within or underneath the ranges.

Your goals Großglockner, Ortler, Wildspitze are located deep inside the Alps and you will only get close to them by car. For GG it might actually be too early since the Glockner Hochstrasse might still be closed at the time.

For orientation, use Vid's Eastern Alps page. There's an interactive map which takes you to the separate range pages.
