My brother, Axe, will be in Europe later this month after leaving Sri Lanka where he has been working. He doesn't have much internet access so I'm trying to help him.

He wants to visit Krakow (our family is from the area historically) and then hike in the Tatras. Questions are:
Best way to get to Krakow via train--from Warsaw or?
A decent/safe hostel etc in Krakow to stay?
How to best get from Krakow to the Tatras to trek. (non technical climbs/scrambles)
Can he base out of a nearby town it the Tatras area to climb over several days? If so where?
Are any SP members interested in meeting up to informally guide and trek? (He'll cover fuel/food etc)

Thanks in advance!

Thank you. That is a very helpful start. Also a slight change of plans as I will be joining him for this trip!

The option to stay is Zakopane. It gives you a possibility to hike in all parts of Polish Tatras. On the other hand, nearby villages may offer a cheaper accommodation.

There are plenty of hiking posibilities. Have a look at this map:

The map covers whole High Tatras.
